As a kid i had an air band radio i could listen to the aircraft/control at Dublin airport. It was a cheap thing. i want something similar for the kids now, just for the airport. What are people using now or has it all changed.

Any scanner or cheap FM/AIR/weather radio that has:

    110MHz to 137MHz (at least)

AM mode. Note that VHF generally is FM, but airband is AM

I think 127MHz AM is airport weather reports.

    Basically

€12 to €25 Mechanical Tuning Dial VHF Radio FM/AIR/WX sometimes in Euro/Bargain shops.

€50 to €120 Basic VHF scanners with memory. Some don't do AM so check

€250 to €500 Basic Communication Receivers. May include Scanner / memories / PC interface.

€500 to €5000 Various semi pro, Professional Surveillance/Communications receivers usually with coverage of at least 100kHz to 1300MHz in all modes. Various features.

You should be able to get something good for Airband under €30

This little radio might be worth considering:

It's been around a while now, so should be available 2nd hand on eBay etc. I haven't used one but it is a dedicated VHF receiver (AM on airband) and so should offer reasonable performance for a good price.

The only thing is it doesn't seem to have the 8.33kHz spacing that newer, higher spec scanners would have, but I don't think that spacing is in use here.

As always, you'll get the best results with a good external antenna.
