cost of boundary walls

    hi

I have recently moved to new house but am short of a wall at the front of the house and to the side where there is a farmers slatted shed, in total the boundaries measure about 140m in length (80m to the side of house and 60m to the front). Any ideas what is would cost to build a concrete wall to the side of the house about 4 blocks high and same to the front. Need to face off the front wall with natural stone but am going to leave that for a while. Don't have a foundation for the side wall but there is one in place at the front.

    Any ideas appreciated?
    Thanks

there are 12.5 blocks in a square meter of wall . so 1 meter high and 140 meters long give 140m2 x12.5 =1750 blocks. 4" blocks cost around 550euro a 1000 .labour should be around .60cents a block (just got my house for this price in galway)
blocks 963 euro(allow 200/300 for sand cement etc)
    labour 1050euro

Paul 127 gave a very good response on the basics of a wall, but as I've just learned from building my own house, the final reality of a budget is different to the initial costs.

Firstly you will probably need a digger to clear top layer of earth and do a bit of a trench for the foundations on the side. The foundations will be very basic compared to a house, but still necessary if you want the job done right. Also, check if the front wall foundations are wide enough for blocks and stone.

9 inch cavity blocks are the standard now for boundry walls, 4 inch isn't stable enough, also you need a few more blocks for pillars etc. Cost of 9 inch is more like 950 per thousand as opposed to 550 for the 4 inch. You will probably order 2000 blocks to be safe.

Realistically you may end up getting cappings, you know that yourself.

The rate of 60c seems fair enough, I know some block layers who charge more for laying 9' as oppsed to 4' as the 9 are bigger and heavier, which is fair enough. 70-75c might be a safer budget on that

    Blocks - €1,900
    labour - €1,300 for blocks
    digger guy labour - €200
foundations concrete - I'm not sure on this bit, say €100 per m3, but how many m3 depends on how deep and wide you want to go. I'll call this €500 to be sure, but you could be way less than that.
mortar and wall ties for the stone in the future - €300

Total cost - €4,200. That doesn't include cappings and future stone. If you keep on top of things getting under 4k is very achievable.

I'm back again and just wondering if anyone knew the going roughly rate for facing off a brick wall with natural stone (limestone). Looking for nothing fancy just random natural pattern i.e. not a 'consaw' type wall with 90deg angle everywhere. Have seen some nice work from the stonecon crowd around the place...anyone used them?

    Cheers

I'll throw in my opinion although it's not what OP was looking for...
I know everyone's personal preference can be different but I would think hard about building large walls in the countryside...
At our first house we did this and we lived along a small road... It was overkill to be honest and then it required painting and cleaning...
Have you considered a nice hedge....

can you tell me where you purchased your blocks looking for somewhere in galway looking to find a decent price?

So I just got a quote too

€80/M for a 1M high - rendered & capped with pillars appropriatly spaced pillars.

Your numbers seem to be at about €35/M - addmittidly no capping and no rendering.

For reference I was also quoted
€24/M for concerete posts and 3 x concerete rails and 3 rows of wire between the rails.
€17/M for timber post and rails

would price all of these ones lackagh concrete, roadstone, cannon concrete and moylough - will depend on distance from depot mainly

for a wall per metre I would reckon the following -

    fdns -8/m
labour dig and pour - 8/m
    1m high wall - cavity blocks -10.50/m
    labour - 12/m
    plastered finish - 22/m
    capping - lab 7/m
    caps - 15/m

which comes to 82.50. so it sounds about right to me.

in order to comply with planning around my area at least they insist on a natural stone finish - this is from the actual planning permission...

"The new front boundary wall shall be of local, unplastered stone. It shall not be less than 600millimetres viewed from the roadside.

Reason: In the interest of visual amentity"

Still haven't built the wall but have a nice beech hedge - will probably do it eventually if i ever have any money again:confused:

This is an old thread but I was looking for information if possible. I want to build a wall approx 17m x 1.9m. At present there is a wall that I will be removing and building the new wall further back. So I intend to reuse the wall and pier cappings. Apart from dashing the wall I am trying to work out costs. foundations aren't a problem to be dug, I can do that so what I am thinking is I need about 450 cavity blocks (1.25 euro each on goodwins website), mortar (13 bags) and sand (2 yd^3) needed. I could buy more mortar and pour the concrete myself maybe to keep the costs down.

    Blocks €550 approx
    Materials (sand and cement) ?
    Labour ?
    concrete for foundation ?

Could anyone give some advise on the above costs before I go pulling down the wall that exists at the moment!
