As per Title - And I did use search function:

Where can I buy German Style Registration Plates along the West Coast, From Galway right down to Cork.

There is a crowd on Ebay selling them in Dublin for 25.50 + 10.00 shipping but I want to see if I can get them cheaper, i.e without paying 10.00 overpriced shipping from Dublin.

That's probably who I bought from. The shipping might be relatively expensive, but overall it's a decent price.

I'm sure you're not, but it would be boring if everyone thought the same thing was cool.

I want something unique but still classy. It will replace my current rather boy racery looking plates which are white, Irish flag, county name but fat British lettering. They looked good when I bought them but are worn on me.

Spare me from your thoughts on the legality of the plates.

No immunity I'm afraid. Why not use fully conforming plates?

    + 1.

Standard pressed metal plates all the way.

As for the German style plates on any Irish registered car as opposed to a LHD German registered one - The Top Gear Cool Wall comes into play here.

On a Proper Performance Car = Kinda Cool, although not as classy as when they were rare. Have now become de rigueur, so more fashionable, than classy.

On a BMW Fanboy or VAG Ninja owned vehicle = Uncool.

The TDI Brigade = Makes them seriously uncool.

    (P.S. Cyrus - your a Germanophile :D).

I think they are ok, as long as you have the euro flag and country, small Irish county name on top and the dashes.

There is no reference to the type of font that has to be used, only the size and spacing AFAIK.

Correct, no uniform font required for Irish plates.

I have Zee German plates, but I have the dashes, counties etc. etc. I think they look well.

    Complete B*llocks to be honest!

I got them because they look well, something thats a little different but doesnt stand out. To be honest people dont look twice, sure when I got them, I asked the family whats different..and they didnt notice any difference. Its for my personal "pleasure" not anybody elses!!

On a plus side there actually much clearer then the standard ones!!

I ordered mine through Vag Drivers with the Irish Flag and the Dash's.

They will NOT have the county name is Irish on them. Personal choice more of anything. When the NCT comes around the original garages ones will come out from under the stairs.

Hopefully I will not have the car when the NCT is due. Due April and hopefully new Car/Jeep in Jan.

I have them on the M3 (hopefully high performance enough to justify them for you!) and all I've used is the font, apart from that they're as Irish as any legit plate.

At a Garda checkpoint they commented on the car, they didn't seem to care about the plates - not that they'd have a reason to - if it's good enough for them............

Here you go. I just literally took them a few minutes ago just for you. Car is dirty so :(

They are conforming plates, once they have the county name etc as no font is specified, here is the legislation for your reference http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/1990/en/si/0287.html

You can get them from http://eireplates.com/

I think they look well on the A4 to be honest. I'd opt for a couple of plastic screws though to be honest before the ones in rust.

I'm half thinking of maybe getting them for my car (nice big stone caught my front plate last week) but can't make my mind up if they look bad on a non-german car. Font is close enough to the Spanish one so they might...hmmm...

German plates on a SEAT here.

Yeah plastic screws or plate holders to hold them on would have been better.

    Thanks Berty.

Thanks for that. Might get them and see how they look. Are the eire plates ones ok anyone know?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 146 ✭✭Kafer

Eireplates are the ones that Berty got supplied through VAGdrivers.

Eireplates.com was spawned from that group buy on VAGdrivers.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,822 ✭✭✭✭EPM

Just ordered them. Getting surrounds too maybe. Have an account on vagdrivers but only use it to nose about really. Might do something with the text on them maybe...

I'll never understand why people draw attention to themselves by fitting these plates. All it takes is one jobs-worth Traffic Corps cop to ruin your day.

    This is Ireland, not Germany.

German Style plates are provided only as SHOW PLATES and are not legal for use on public roads.

Not according to those that sell them. Wide open to correction on that but I'd presume that they did their research first.

    Anyone know definitively?

I've never had hassle with mine, got stopped by the traffic corp one day after mi lost my front number plate, they looked at my one remaining rear german number plate and said nothing,i've got stopped for speeding and got stopped at check points and not one of them has ever mention the plates and mine don't have the county in Irish on them,i know guys with these plates and the county on them that have passed the NCT.Aesthetically the look way better than our crappy plastic regs and are much easier to read from distance.

The Gardai are not concerned about my number plates.

Nor am I concerned about people's opinions on my number plates.

The only person who will be concerned is the NCT and they WILL be changed over for that.

I know I need screw caps for them. Thing is, they fell off and Im too lazy to go get replacements.

with the eur bit, the dashes and the county name in irish they are legal, its just a font that conforms with guidelines

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,686 ✭✭✭JHMEG

The legality argument is puerile. If the font is good enough for the Germans, at the heart of the EU, the Irish authorities will hardly have a problem.

You should have no problems with the NCT, mine went through no problem. Got mine here EirePlates.com

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
