I have decided to hand my notice in this morning. I really hate my job and just do not want to do it anymore..

Thing is, I dont have another job to go to. I am looking for retail and there seems to quite a lot out there so I dont think it will take me long to find something...

But I am mad to leave?

I cant actually come in to work anymore though. I am deeply unhappy and it has been affecting my health for the last number of months.

Sorry...where did you get the impression there's a lot out there? If it's employment agencies you're looking at, they leave vacancies that have been filled on their sites for months to give the impression they have work.

There isn't a lot out there. There are people qeuing around corners for shop work, and currently I have a niece who's getting depressed because she's breaking her balls to go to interviews and not even getting answers, but when she does, they're negative. So don't be under the impression there's loads out there as it's incorrect. There will always be one job to be found though in my opinion, it just depends how hard you go looking and how much footwork and relentless enthusiasm you put in.

Or, you could try re-figure wht it is you hate about the job you have ( ask yourself will it always be a factor in every job you ever get anyway, etc?)

I don't think you're mad to leave if you're so unhappy that it outweighs the good or is damaging your health etc. but weigh it up and give it some thought, it's not easy out there today and won't be for a while. Write a list of your skills and the pros and cons of your job...good luck :)

EDIT: I only saw your second response now as I was slower posting than you were...I see your point now. Like I say though try talking to someone about it and do weigh it up. Go through every channel you can before leaving because if it's damaging your health because of negligence on your employers part you need to investigate why and if they're willing to help you...but you have to ask for help before they can give it sometimes. I know how you feel I've just been going through something similar. I am hanging in as best i can until a solution is found. There will always be external factors in a job (bullies, long journeys to get there, etc.) that will affect you no matter what job it is so before you take the responsibility yourself of walking away I would try to discuss why your health is suffering before leaving.

if your young mortgage free and single go for it...

Its tough out there jobwise. So consider your options carefully. Why not take a few days off sick and consider your options.

Thanks for the good advice. Ive been thinking about it for about 2 weeks to be honest. I am doing telesales at the moment and really cant do it anymore. Been doing it for 6 years.....

You probably have tried taking a holiday from it.

I was in a similar position. Was in a place for years and could have been there for life. But I hated it. I couldn't sleep at night with the thought of going in the next day.

I waslked out and had no job for four months. Still don't regret it.

    Just from personal experience.

Ya poor thing...if you're young and you're single...I'd say at the end of the day....life is going to be full of crap the older you get...so weigh it up and if it's wrecking yoru head that bad...leggit! But I wouldn't advise what the dude a few posts above said and not just turn up after lunch ....whatever the lovely feeling was he had (or she) he didn't get a reference, and you might as well do it proper and give notice and get a reference if you can hack it another few weeks...check your contract if you have one to see what notice you need to give...best of luck and chin up...you're not alone cos thousands of people have problems at work, it's only a rare and lucky few who have it so good... :o

I'd be feeling fairly unhappy as well if I'd been working in Telesales for 6 years I reckon! I think it's the sort of job that very few people actually enjoy. Yes quit your job and although it might take you a while to find something else you'll be better off in the long run. The one thing I would advise is to make sure you can financially afford to quit right away. You'll be eligible for the dole but it can take quite a while to process - so I assume you have enough savings to be out of work for a while?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,124 ✭✭✭kittensoft1984

Yeah I can survive for a while. I am extremely good at budgeting so will be ok for a while.

Waiting period of 7 weeks I think to get dole when you quit , so you are only eligible for the dole after 7 weeks, just something to bear in mind

Excuse me?? Is Galway that much different for jobs than Dublin......maybe we should all move over there!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,124 ✭✭✭kittensoft1984

I dont live in Galway anymore...im in dublin. I have already applied for quite a few jobs and with the experience I have in sales i shuould be fine.

In Galway????? The whole of the West of Ireland job market is completely depressed at the minute, things elsewhere are bad but nowhere near as bad as anywhere West of the Shannon......just look at the Galway Advertiser nowadays, they hardly have any vacancies advertised compared to the pages and pages that they had last year.....only company recruiting actively at the minute is Pure H20 out in Ballybrit, which is Telesales and minimum wage..

You have to wait 6 or 7 weeks but i think the op can make a claim if her doctor provide proof that the job was affecting her health.

Well just so you know, I am an experience architectural technician with 7 years office experience and i have been applying for jobs since last year and I still havent found anything......main reason, Employers have the pick of the bunch and can be as fussy as they like......Don't get me wrong, I wish you the best of luck finding another job but also don't want you to think you will get another job just like that, it is a recession after all....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,124 ✭✭✭kittensoft1984

Im not living in Galway! Im back in Dublin....

I have been sick more times since starting this job than ever before. I am also completly run down and depressed.

But is it worth staying in a job you detest? And which is making you ill?

No. But can you survive on €204 for the next how many weeks/months even years???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,280 ✭✭✭lmahoney79

No of course not, by all means leave a job that make you feel that bad. I just dont want you to think you will get another job with that much ease and then be disappointed.....just a helpful warning is all. You may be one of the extremely lucky ones and find a job soon but its a lot less likely these days.

Leave. There's no point in letting it mess with your mental health if you don't have to. (i.e. no mortgage etc).

I read your post Iam currently looking in the retail sector it is very difficult they are looking for specific experience broaden you search. Its mentally draining looking for a job when you havent got one and the money will run low because the job seekers allowance doesnt come quick if you can hang on in there. The job wont seem as bad when you know you are looking for an ecsape route, in the meantime send your cv to every agencies.

Fair play and best of luck with it!

Nothing worse than a soul destroying job so it sounds like you made the right decision.

Best of luck. If you have some savings and help from your mum you're better off than a lot of people.

I worked in a job I hated before and the misery is causes is unbelievable. it colours everything else in your life too. I've promised myself I'll never do that again. You wouldn't think work could take over that much but it does. I love my job now (most of the time!) and my quality of life is so much better.

I had reservations about coming to this job in the first place as I had heard what it was like....should have listened to my gut instinct I suppose!

It was affecting everything else and thats not a life I want to lead anymore!

I quit my job last week too with no job to go to. Like you my gut told me no but I took it cause there was not a whole load out there. I am asking myself the same question. I felt it was affecting my health and I knew I wouldn't get any support so I quit. In the long run it was the right decision but reality is hitting me now.
