Putting Ring on a Bull

I debated long and hard with myself about the wording of this thread title!
Anyway, have you guys any experience of putting rings on bulls? I've never done it myself, as I generally sell bulls at a young age or as weanlings, or in to the factory. However, I now have some pedigree Lm bulls coming along and these will need to ringed and halter trained.
I presume the best approach is to use a punch like this one? http://www.christiesdirect.com/product.php?sp_p=4032

What is needed in the line of anaesthetic? Where would you inject? Any other advice or tips?
    Thanks in advance.

we normally restrain the animal very well use the punchers to make hole then push ring through , very important to make sure the screw bit actually fits in to the thread as we have noticed a few times they dont and you have to start again with a new ring:mad: we dont use anaesthetic and the rare few times the vet has done it for us they dont either

    i rarely do..ring my bulls...
have been known to give a ring+luck penny..to buyers!
hav had vet ring bulls--no anaesthetic, have been told to get either vet/man to do them(ring them)as a bull will remember-so next day ur out in a field..hd could pay u back!
    think--they recommend u,do them young--before reach a yr old...
hav an uncle-which used the screw in ring(tightens by screw)(prob b more for showing)-no hole needed..mite fall out--only problem

    About that "Bull remembering you"
It depends on WHY your ringing the bull,we had our stock bull for a few years, but this year he has taken to charging and following us round the fields,so myself and the auld fella got him in the crush rang[rung?Ringed?] him and it taught him a lesson.

OP,I'd say don't bother ringing the bull unless he/they turn out wild.yes,I know what you'll say, bulls are dangerous, equally you don't want to be pi**ing him off needlessly,as was said,he WILL remember. But is that a good or a bad thing?

I would say ring him regardless
No point finding out the hard way that he turned wicked
He will be bigger faster and stronger than you, the chain might buy you the seconds to get clear.
I would get the vet or a stranger do it.
I've seen the bull at home take a grudge against my brother from dosing and handling him.He was just about lucky he had someone to get the bull away from him to escape.
I loaded him for the factory the next day like a lamb.

    That's gas !!! A bull with a grudge, nothing more dangerous :D
I'm glad I stuck to AI with the sucklers now.

Oh God no, so many people have been killed by bulls that were not ringed. Every bull should be ringed before he is 12 months old and he should be handled by this ring to let him know that you are in control. Many people won't want to ring him themselves, so get a vet to do it. Its not difficult. But I can't stress enough, a ring is a must for control of your bull!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the help lads, looks like it's going to be the vet doing the job!

So if he's ringed, he's safe????

Don't be lulled into a false sense of security by thinking just because there's a ring in him that you are safe!!

i wouldnt suggest that a bull with a ring is safe but at least if there is a ring in his nose you can handle him better
