Long distance bike advice

A couple of us are looking at a 3,000km ride across Europe, taking about 4/5 weeks to complete it. Would it be advisable for us to use touring bikes instead of our road bikes? We're both used to our road bikes, and I know that we could get panniers to fit. Never ridden a touring bike but would imagine it would slow us down if we were to achieve the distances we wanted. Any advice

If you are comfortable with the road bike and can keep it light just stick with that. There is no real advantage to a tourer other than the clearances for wider tyres/mudguards and better stability with a heavy load. They can be more relaxed but you don't need this if you are comfortable already on the road bike.

Try it out maybe for a weekend in Ireland first so you have an idea what it will be like loaded.

Keeping it light is the key.
