Well the first thing I have to ask is, Are you looking at a TFS or a DMax as the DMax was introduced in that year.

They both give vry little trouble but in fairness are 2 totally different drives.

The old TFS is very basic in operation. It also suffers from a real problem of turbo lag which can leave you kinda stranded when coming out of junctions til the engine spools up. There is a few things you can do to lessen this though.

If it is a DMax you are getting, do not buy the 2.5. It is the poverty spec one and really is put to shame by the 3.0l Dont worry about the 3.0L either as it is not the same lump that was in the trooper.

The only thing I can think of at the min that gives trouble on the TFS is, rear hub oil seals tend to leak and that makes a mess of the brake shoes. The front calipers sometimes stick on the slides and can be difficult to free out.

BTW, the DMax has a LSD as standard! :D

Hi Harry and welcome to boards.ie.

Not usually a good idea to dredge up an old thread as your first one but in this case I'll let you off as it's short and very relevant to your query ;)

Hopefully Slidey or one of our jap 4x4 experts will be able to help.

    Hey Lads
Their must be something in the water !
This is my first post and i also have a 2.5 TFS (Too ****** Slow !) and would be keen to hear how to make her a bit more lively. All i've done so far is removed the cat.
    Thanks in advance

Sorry dude, I was on mobile.

I will have a look for an old post of mine, it has been that long since I have worked on them that I am a little hazy on the details.

I'll get back to the thread when I find it.

    hey,

just a quick one regarding Isuzus. I recently bought a 05 Crewcab Dmax, and often when putting it into neutral i'm left listening to a horrible knocking, grinding sound! if i play around with the clutch and gears I can stop this noise, but it is very disconcerting.

Has anyone ever experienced this? Should I be worried?

sounds like your dual mass flywheel is shagged. time for a new one, looks like you will be 1000 euro poorer than you expected.

I cannot find it at all.

There was a vacuum solenoid on the passenger side that controlled turbo waste gate I think.

It had a small cardboard filter on the bottom of it and we used to take them out but it is that long ago I can't remember the details right.

I did a couple of searches here for my old posts but failed to find anything to jog my memory.

I'll ask an old fella in work tomorrow and see if he can remember.

Nice one, thanks for trying, I'll have a look for that filter and put it in the recycling bin !
