I'm curious to know if a person decides to drive a van instead of a car can they get insurance. The reason I ask is it seems from what I've read you need to prove you need the van for business, is this the case. Thanks.

No, you can insure a van for private use, just like a car. If you're using it for a business then you should have commercial insurance, and then you can also pay commercial tax on it (cheaper).

Jor El, I was of the opinion that car=private, van=commercial in the eyes of all insurance companies. I can't drive a car because I'm insured on a commercial policy, when I was insured on my fiesta before the van, I could drive any car with owners permission etc.

As far as I know, it's strictly car=private policy, van=commercial. Private policy holders can't drive commercials and commercial policy holders can't drive cars.

Or maybe I'm just confused with all the insurance malarky I've to deal with :P

I can drive any insured car or van with my insurance, up to a certain size. It will depend on your insurance terms as to what you can drive, but a van can be insured commercially or privately. Commercial insurance will cost you more, but you get the cheaper tax.

A van is commercial if it's insured as such. Since you have a business that uses a van, I presume you have commercial insurance on that, hence your policy is commercial and you probably aren't covered to drive private vehicles with it.

Yup, my policy is commercial for sure. So are you telling me you can park in loading bays even though you're insured privately because you have commercial tax? What size vehicles are you allowed drive up to? 3.5tn or less?

Just insure it as a plumber...theres nothing to get concerned about, you wont need to prove anything to the insurance company/broker...you'll need a doe cert to tax instead of an NCT....its all very simple...;)
