Thomson UPC Mediabox Off/On

From time to time, my DVR from Thomson (aka UPC Mediabox) have a tendancy to switch it self off and then back on into standby when initaly set in standby (i.e. the clock disapears, red standby light goes off and no reaction when I use the remote) - Makes sense?

This only happens when it is in standby, otherwise never.

Anyone know why? I checked the software version and this haven't changed...

Mine has done this since I got it. I suspect it's something to do with letting the network knowing it's alive or some-such.

There seems to be an implemented functionality in (all) UPC boxes, which makes the box go through a power-off/on reset after exactly 10 minutes in standby.

This only happens if this is not near or during a planned recording (I tested this).

I think by this way UPC tries to keep the boxes 'fresh' and less sensitive to any memory leaks or memory corruption. All who run windows knows that a reboot from time to time does help to keep things stable

That shouldn't be an issue with devices like these - they're not running a full OS with many various processes running at the same time, so poor memory management should not be an issue.

I always thought it was just looking for firmware updates or some sort of update (EPG, encryption?). Annoying thing about it is if you have your DVD player connected through the UPC box (I do this as my TV like most only has one RGB input, and the old DVD player has no YPbPr or HDMI out), it will make the picture flicker a bit when it's doing whatever it's doing.

Poor memory management should not be an issue on any OS, but it is. The fact that the middelware on the UPC box seems less complex than 'a full OS' (not sure what that is), does not mean it cannot encounter this issue. Remember also that the OpenTV layers really act as an OS to a set of applications which can run on this box.

Surely you cannot blame the UPC box for this limitation in your set-up :o and furthermore, you can easily avoid it by not switching your box to standby, so i dont see what the problem is.

My box also does this in stand by, but only if the tv is turned off and not left in stand by mode.
