Beetle identification - no photo

    Hi

I don't have a photo, but I saw hundreds (if not thousands) of beetles on a beach in Inishowen (north Donegal) at the weekend (13th June 2009). They had copper (or brown) backs and green/blue head/neck areas (not sure of the technical term). A lot of them ended up in the water. They could fly, and although they tried to bite (I could see their jaws digging into my skin), it was barely noticeable (and possibly imaginary...). What type of beetles are they? What were they doing?

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Rob
