The price for pay as you go has been released in Italy.
With the 3g vesion, their prices were similar to ours:

    Italian 3g 8gb Euro 499 16gb Euro 569
    Irish 3g 8gb Euro 480 16gb Euro 569

New 3gs prices in Italy are:

    16gb Euro 619
    32gb Euro 719

I thought the new 16 and 32 gb were going to take over the price points of the old 8 and 16gb models. This is a bit much to swallow.

That would be a bit of a kick in the teeth, alright.

    Best wait and see methinks.

PAYG is always going to be prohibitively expensive for something like this. In fact, I'd be very surprised if O2 even offer a PAYG option initially.

That is if they ever get around to announcing their price plans and release date for the bloody thing.

    Ouch.

    That's painful.

Knowing O2 and the way things work here, I suppose we can expect much the same. :(

o2 can eat **** if they think Im paying that amount or anything close for an iphone, madness, and the country in ruins and all that.

and i dont believe either that its not up to o2 what the prices are, despite what they say on their forums

They were similar price on PAYG a while back so no surprise. lets wait and see what the bill option costs.

Yep - Apple are greedier than before.

But it may be down to the fact that the handset isn't subsidised by the network, or subsidised by as much as it was before.

I wonder what happens with the revenue sharing between Apple and the network on the prepay models?

The increase in price could be down to the fact that alot of Italian prepay handsets are exported, leaving the network out of pocket when they have to cough up to Apple.

Perhaps they've realised this and have increased the price so they don't get burned again.

    It's a theory anyway.

Hell, I can get a laptop or a notebook for that kind of money. Do they think we are stupid or what?

the 3.0 update is as good as a new phone for me anyway. iPhone 3g here.

irish prices are being announced at 2pm today

€609 for a 32Gb on PAYG here in Ireland and available next Friday.

I'm a light user, so that seems quite reasonable.

The higher Italian pricing may be to discourage non-Italian users buying what is a SIM-free iPhone 3GS

Cost over 12 months is essentially the same IMHO.

    €40 per month + €299 for a 32Gb 3GS = €779

    €20 per month (my normal usage) + €609 (32Gb PAYG) = €849 - €70 free credit
    is €779 also.

If you text much expect that minimum billpay figure to change quite a bit. (Also, the minimum contract is 18 months, not 12, so again the overall cost fluctuates further)

I'm surprised O2 haven't dropped the price of the iPhone 3G. Oh wait, no, I'm not surprised. This is O2 Ireland after all :D

Seriously though, you'd think the price of the 3G would come down with the 3Gs out.

Is there any way to get a data add-on for PAYG? I imagine that's where the real cost for PAYG would arise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,096 ✭✭✭anoble66

if your on O2...No. Basically they charge you a certain amount per KB up to a max of 99c. Once at 99c you can download 50MB for the day free....but if you go over that they screw u good. Meteor is the same.

If you unlock and go with 3Pay, you can pay 9.99 a month for a 1GB data add on....best option for PAYG from what I can see.

Thanks, I'm thinking of going 3 alright, they seem the cheapest. Are there any problems with their network anymore?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,096 ✭✭✭anoble66

no idea how good their network is....coverage is certainly one of the best from what I can see. Only switching with them tomorrow when I can unlock! been using an unlock SIM with meteor for a while so looking forward to getting on to 3G with 3..

    Godeffindammit.

WHY SO MUCH. I had my heart (mostly) set on buying an unlocked iPhone in Italy over the summer. It'd cost more than the holiday now.

That said, how much is a "professional" iPhone unlock/jailbreak/whatever-the-term-is, these days? Would it make much of a difference to buy one here for €609 and pay to get it ... jailbroken?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 375 ✭✭Maldini2706

Any word on how much it's gonna be in Belgium?

I hear Hong Kong is sim-free too, it's a bit dodgy buying them on eBay though isn't it?

As of now, the iphone 3gs still remains in a none-jailbroken state. This most likely will change with time, maybe 2 months or so at the most.

However jailbreaking does not mean unlock, but the iphone 3gs uses the same baseband as the iphone 3g, so you would be looking at around 2 months before you could use the o2 bought 3gs on another network.
