Some good Vietnam War movies, something along the lines of Platoon, Apocalypse Now, The Killing Fields. If anyone has any suggestions it would be much appreciated.

As mentioned above "Casualties of War". it seems to be forgotten about a lot of the time. If you're looking for something a bit different try "Good Morning Vietnam". and although it was set during the Korean War give "MASH" a go.

If you expand to WW2, check out the 2008 version of "Outpost".

Looks more like a horror but will defo give it a go!

Have seen most of the above and enjoyed them all (FMJ in particular). MASH will be added to the list for sure.

    If your looking to expand from the vietnam war, try any of the following;

    Heartbreak ridge
    Brotherhood
    Kelly's heroes
    Where eagles dare

I've watched the above countless times, Kelly's heroes is one of my fav movies :D

The boys in company c. Good Nam movie from 1978.
The green berets. John Wayne's Nam effort.
I've read a lot of books on Vienam and the one that sticks out is The tunnels of Cu Chi. There is a recent movie about the tunnel rats but don't believe it is that good. Would love to see a decent movie made on this story.

Try to get the TV show Tour of Duty. An absolutly fantastic depiction of the Vietnam war, shame though that all the music was changed for the DVD release.

Not quite a nam film but a good film on the effects of the war is "Coming Home", and then there's "born on the 4th of july"

I remember seeing "Go tell the spartans" years ago and enjoyed it but its probably horribly dated and outclassed by the likes of Full metal jacket

    Dont forget Rambo! :pac:

Whent its on FX is the music edited? I've only started to watch it but I noticed Paint it Black as the theme song.

I don't think they edited the music for TV but I've only seen bits and pieces of it on FX. It does loose a lot of impact when they use generic music in place of classics 70s music.

I understand 60's/70's music sets the tone for 'Nam films but sometimes i feel that it becomes all a bit pop video, where images are edited to fit the song. And in turn the films just become some vehicle for selling soundtracks. "What a wonderful world" in Good morning vietnam for instance illustrates my point.

Also there must be at least one film made about Vietnam through the eyes of the North Vietnamese? isn't there?

While some films do go overboard with getting music and image to match it really works well for Tour of Duty. You'll hear troops discussing songs of the period and I always felt that the way the show used music to set the time.

While you can't bolame the makers of Tour of Duty for not getting the rights to the music for nonTV broadcasts back then it's really annoying these days when a show changes all the music for the DVD release. Season One of life was a real disappointment as all the music by bands such as the Rolling Stones and Queens of the Stone Age was replaced with bland indie music. Really took a lot away from some scenes and reduced the fantastic ending to merely satisfactory.

Oliver Stone has made a trilogy of Vietnam movies the last of which is Heaven and Earth. This is seen from the eyes of the Vietnamese and is well worth a watch.
