Went into the apple store online and had a look around, clicked on educational discount and the 3g/3gs came up. Are these elligible for the discount? If so, how'd you buy them, how much would they be?

No. You can only get the iPhone through O2 and they certainly don't offer an education discount. Apple shouldn't really be listing the iPhone on the Irish online store at all. I assume its presence is a left-over from the U.S. store where it's possible to sign up to an AT&T plan via Apple.

Apple only offer education discounts on Macs and Apple software.

A similar offer is in Ireland. If you qualify for the education discount in Ireland you can get a rebate of up to €185 cash back when you purchase a mac and iPod.
