I was just wondering, what are the rough costs of getting someone like Munro Acoustics to design your studio for you?

Well there's only one way to find that out!

Hey Sean, that's something I've been looking into myself the past month or two.

I have plans of starting my own place in the near future, ideally the next year or two depending how things go, so I've been contacting a few of the sound acoustic companys to try to get an idea of how things work.

You'll find it very hard to get even a rough estimate of costs because projects vary so much from client to client. If you don't have a clear idea of the size/layout of the studio you envisage it's pretty much impossible to estimate costs.

I've contacted American, UK, European and Australian companies and only managed to get a rough idea of costs from one or two companies. If, unlike me, you already own the space/land you are planning to build the studio I think you would have an easier time. I know one company (Pilchner-Schoustal) were willing to draw up plans and a more accurate budget if a floor plan of the area could be provided along with all the details required.

I'm sure you know of the photo diary studio design threads on gearslutz http://www.gearslutz.com/board/photo-diaries-recording-studio-construction-projects/ If you have the time to read down some of the bigger threads they will often mention a rough cost when pushed. Quite scary costs sometimes!

If you want to PM me to talk about some of the costs that were mentioned to me feel free. Also Dav around here went quite far with regards to studio layout/costs before building his current setup, he might chime in if he sees this thread!

Niall, pity we didn't have time to organise that meeting before. There's a story there not for the public!

Marc Carolan from Suite Studio had his room entirely built by Munro.

Peter at Middlewalk just bought the design and consultation and did it himself. The consultation consisted of Onsite visits and measurements.
Design and Spec to agreed performance.

In Peter's case there must have been 30 to 40 Custom drawings of everything from the general acoustics placement down to the spacing of the panel pins on the diffusors.

I think you'd find it difficult to get solid figures from any reputable firm because there are just too many variables.

It's just too ' How long is a piece of string ' ....

I believe Peter paid in the region of £8.5 k for 2 site visits one pre finish one post (to confirm performance) plus design and spec.

Then there's the actual treatment itself.

If either or both of you would like to nick down for a look now is a good time as the final fabric finish hasn't been installed yet.

A visit will allow you to hear about all the shyte I do be goin' on about here plus get a greater understanding of how and why it actually works so well.

We're in negotiations with another 2 midlands studios and 1 in Dublin for Munro to 'do em up' ...

    Fun times ahead ...

Do you think he's checked out the acoustics in the church already?
