lisTen to the sound test 'aplevelcheck ' thats an oak custom with a ludwig vintage snare OAK CUSTOM = 22 inch kick , 10, 12, 14 toms

i have a maple custom gold lug , and i prefer the oak for rock

single ply uncoated ambassadors heds top and bottom
powerstorke 3 clear on kick , with black ambassador on front with small hole
no damping tuned above medium tight

custom oak it is then i guess.

what snare would you go for? i like the ludwig black beauty but i 'm thinking a 13" rather than 14.

also, should toms be open or closed bottom?

that snare in that clip was a 1979 ludwig 402 - which is aluminium ( same snare bonham used to use )

13 inch drum is going to be a bit weedy if you want an in your face up front sound
unless you tune it below medium , and its a deep drum 6 inches or more.

the blackbeauty is brass, they sound similar, but id prefer the black beauty
its got something magic in the focus it has

if you are looking for REAL up front drum sound ,
( like fleetwood mac rumours album )

you need to take the bottom heads of the toms and kick , tape em up a bit and stick a mic inside each ,

but that would be a very dry and punchy sound -

i wouldnt take the heads of normally .

any examples by other bands of how you want the drums ?

the closest thing to the sound in my head is (and i really hate to say this) nu-metal ala lincoln park etc

    lincoln park etc

    Get right outta town !

If you're going to all this trouble to record a kit - why not hire an experienced recording engineer too?

Otherwise it might be be more 'South Park' ;)

    Who's the drummer ?

why bother? i have a few very experienced engineers in both studios that are more then willing to lend a hand or give some direction at any point.

I have gone through several kits in the studio and have had plenty of bands bring their own.
Best kits for punch and power were my own Sonor S Class Maple and a DW collectors a band brought in. Yamaha Absolutes are also very good.
Session hire have a birch Absolute for hire. Ask for Collie and drop my name for a deal.

if you can get a sonor id go with that - they are great .

never liked DW drums - something tubby sounding about them .

yammies are always good deliverers .

Maybe this is herecy but I think samples may help get you the sound you are looking for quicker. Get a good recording of the kit and blend in samples with the close mics to give it punch. All that Nu Metal stuff uses samples especially on kicks as double beaters are common and generally one beater is always a wee bit weaker than the other, using samples evens this out.

Check out either of these sample libararies:

down to the drummer IMO. If the guy can't hit them properly for that sound no amount of hardware will get the sound you're after.
