Producers for beginners

Just curious about the use of an external producer having recorded a track. My bandmates and I are eager to go back to the studio to record just one track and we want to plan out exactly how we're going to go about this.

Would people recommend just settling for the guy doing the recording to master it? Or should we look for a producer who's into the kind of music we want to make?

Ideally I'd love to get to know a producer into early 90's grunge and mainstream rock bands such as Dark New Day, Puddle of Mudd, Three Days Grace, Finger Eleven and Seether. Any bands got some stories of past experience with producers they could share?

no, on lower budgets the recording engineer will possibly mix but mastering is a totally differant kettle of fish and should be handled by a mastering engineer.

also, i think you're mixing your terms up a little. a producer is the person responsible for the session - sourcing the studio, sourcing the engineer, making suggestions on composition & arrangement. they are generally accomplished musicians themselves.

for that kind of sound mick trackmix is recommended as an angineer and has a lovely set-up with more sexy amps than you could shake a stick at. he's also pretty hot with drums. he's on here a bit. drop him a line and have a chat.

nice qoute from butch vig in his Q&A over at gearslutz
in the most basic term, a producer is just someone who has an opinion

why roll the eyes dav, butch is a world class producer and im guessing the comment was a light hearted dig at himself and his "producer" tag.

Hey no offense! I wasn't rolling my eyes in real life it's just an expression! ''Damn I wish boards had more expressions!''
