I am trying to put up shelves in a room in a very old house - pre 1890. The plaster appears to be coming away from some walls in places, but where I'm trying to drill it seems ok, it just crumbles away! I can't make a small hole without making a large hole!! Potentially if you find something solid, you should be OK for light stuff, but the wall could be made of anything and is possibly past its sell by date.

thanks for that... yeah, I think the wall is in pretty poor condition! I think I might need to leave the shelf idea, unless anyone has any good advice!!
