Changing oil (mixing)

Hey everyone. Im having a bit of an issue.

Just a few days ago i drained the oil in my car and change the air filter and put in only 1 litre of oil (keep in mind this was 10W-40 lubricant)

Now the oil light just came on again and i have oil but its 15W-40 mineral.

I was just wondering would this damage the engine if i mixed the two of them?

Your help would be appreicated :)

Mixing would be better than having only 1 litre inside. Could you not go and buy some more 10W-40?

May I ask why you felt that 1 litre was sufficient when you were filling up the oil? Did you not check the dipstick after you had finished??

Im only a young fella with zero money. I havent been driving the car much so i said id only put in 1 litre then an another 3 after another while. I just found that 15W-40 oil in the shed and im a bit nervous about putting it in because i dunno, the engine might blow. I havent a clue when it comes to cars

What year is the car? 15w 40 mineral oil is really for old cars and when your changin the oil in the car you should of filled it to its capacity which would be arould 3-5 litres it tells ya in the manual book how much oil it takes

Oil is not like petrol in a car it's not used over time like a fuel, a set amount is needed to lubricate the moving parts of the engine and this should be as close an amount as possible to the manufacturers recommended specs. Putting just 1 litre in and expecting all to be ok is suicide for the engine.

    its a 94 corolla.
i know its suppose to be filled with bout 4 an a half litres but i said id put the rest in some other time as i wouldnt be driving it for a few weeks.

Did you also change the oil filter? If not I would advise waiting until funds allow and change the oil filter and get 4 litres of proper oil and do the job all at once, otherwise your risking making a balls of things and mixing the new oil with the old in the filter.

Throw in what you have. It will be ok. At least you can use the car then.

Well then you should be using mineral oil not 10w 40. Putting the right oil into the car can make the engine last a lot longer

For a oul carolla, you'll be ok.
mixing grade's is not ideal tho.

think it only takes 3.5 liters and 15/40 is fine for old toyotas

If you have driven the car with 1Litre of oil in engine, I would guess that the engine is now f*cked. The filter would take half that

Surely the oil light was on constant from the first run after only putting a litre in? Thats never going to be enough to build pressure up.

OP - I'm assuming that a 94 Corolla only has an oil pressure light? If you've run the engine for any length of time with low oil pressure then mickdw is most likely right.

More likely you'll be fine, them auld jap engines can take a lot of

    Oh dear.

The Corolla is probably ok. Few things will kill a 1994 Corolla enigne, any old mineral oil will be fine, but dear god put in more than 1 litre of something

As long as you only drive the car under the bridge, it should be fine.

1 litre of oil is not enough, the oil filter will take half that. how much oil was in the sump when ya drained it? you should of known.

    id say the engine is still ok. i often dipped cars that people were driveing and the dip stick registered feck all;
