Scriptwriting Workshops

I've been thinking of running some workshops for budding scriptwriters. The fact is I see festivals and workshops in Dublin, Galway and Cork - I look at the calibre of writer presenting the workshop and note their CVs. They may, and I'm sure are excellent teachers but most have very little practical experience.

I have nearly twenty years experience working in Television, Theatre - and film. I know the industry inside out. So here's my question.

Would anyone here be interested in a scriptwriting workshop in Westport county Mayo.

If so what would you like - Three day workshop or five day?

How much do you think it should cost.

If you look up my name on IMDB it will point you to some of my credits and give you some idea of my level of experience.

I was thinking maybe a three day workshop at *€120 max 12 persons.

    Feedback appreciated.

    Len Collin

I guess the lack of replies is my answer LOL.

It's very difficult to get feedback re: what people would theoretically want to do, unless you've taught them before (and even then it's tricky). If you think it's something you could do, go for it - find a venue, do some research into costs of similar stuff, get advertising.

The tricky thing with creative workshops is that you need both a) practical experience and b) the ability to use that to teach well. Some writing workshops by 'big names' can be taught very badly - you need two sets of skills to run a workshop well.

Best of luck with it. :)

I've lead workshops before and done talks as well. At Universities and arts centres around the UK but not in Ireland.

Ah, okay. Were they by invitation? It sort of sounds like you're not sure about whether or not to risk organising something yourself - apologies if that's not the case.

    Yes they were Claire.

Just trying to gauge if there's any demand. I've contacted FAS for example who run workshops and they haven't got back to me yet - but hey it's only been a week.

It just seems to me that would be writers are being shortchanged as the courses that are on offer are nearly always being run by people who have very few credits and are not working in the industry now. This is particularly true in Ireland.

But if there isn't the interest then that's fine.

I've posted this on filmmakersnetwork.ie where it is getting a good response.

So if anyone's interested check it out.

I would have been interested if it was in Dublin, but you stated in your opening post that it would be in Mayo.

I may well do one in Dublin. I just felt there was already quite a lot going on in Dublin. Perhaps when my son goes back to UCD I'll be able to sort that out as he could source a location etc.
