I joined my first band over 20 years ago, and we played the following list of stuff..... and most of this set list is still being played out every night of the week by the vast majority of bands I see playing in pubs. These songs have been kicked to death over the last 20 years, so could everyone circulate this list, which should become known as the 'banned set list':
(as you can see, most of this stuff is lead guitar based)

    1. Hey Joe
    2. All along the Watchtower
    3. Foxy Lady
    4. Sweet Home Alabama
    5. Highway to Hell
    6. All Right Now
    7. Cocaine
    8. Bad Moon Rising
    9. Brick in the Wall
    10. Keep on Rocking in the Free World
    11. Long Train Running
    12. Superstitious
    13. Summertime (when a band is asked to play jazz)
    14. The Gambler (if your band is based in Donegal)
    15. The Galway Girl
    16. Brown Eyed Girl
    17. Ride On (I can never go with you etc etc))
    18. Crossroads

There are many others, so feel free to add as you can think of them

There are also a few bands who shouldnt be covered for whatever reasons:

zeppelin - loads can play the stuff but who can really pull off robert plant???
oasis - any cover i ever saw is always horrendous. love em/hate em thay just have a certain attitude

    The Who - Keith Moon
    Michael Jackson
Guns and roses - again axl rose had a certain attitude

Any rocked up versions of whiney boy band songs because the band is trying to be so cool that it doesnt matter what they play blah blah blah

I agree... Zepplin shouldnt be attempted, if you could sing like Plant, you wouldnt be doing the pubs. Ive also never heard a good Oasis cover...
The Beetles are also a very difficult band to cover properly.

Your mention of Axl Rose reminds me...

    19. Sweet Child of Mine
