From blue's sheet I gather CPU affects its performance most. But it depends entirely on what you are doing in the application. Are you trying to spellcheck? Load up a bunch of templates? Work on enourmous documents?

The users are working on big/mulitiple word docs as well as heavy outlook usage. Does word/outlook benefit from more than 2 cores on XP ? ie is a faster dual core better than a slower quad?

    Thanks

No need to be a smart hole.

Things I would invest in to boost performance (in this order, and depending on budget, but you mention 10K drives, so I'm guessing it's not that small):

    RAM
    SSD
    CPU

I would prefer a fast dual core to a slow quad for office purposes.
