Commute Bag Recommendations?

I still commute with a backpack but I only go around 5km each way at the moment. Have you considered looking into panniers? Would keep weight off your back which makes for a much more enjoyable cycle.

Haven't really looked into panniers Donal - my commute is approx 10km each way, so I would say backpack would be fine!

I do a 14k commute...if you buy a good back pack (such as the Deuter) it shouldn't hurt your back too much. I'm doing a 14k commute and it's fine (I did the wicklow 100k with it on my back too!). Bear in mind that 18L is quite small. I've a 20ltr Deuter bag and its a struggle to get everything in to it some days.

Would 20 litres be ok without change of shoes fitting in there??

I have this one and it's perfect.

I can squeeze a pair of shoes in with clothes, just about. But I always leave shoes in work.

Edit: it can be expanded to fit a bit more, handy.

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=18421 I have this one. It's very light but after 8-10kms with it my back gets sweaty and it's kinda annoying. With a lot of effort i can squeeze trousers, shirt, and a pair of shoes.. but i ll have to leave my lunch at home :p So i just leave the shoes in work.

That's why I like my Deuter. It has that air-strip thing going on. Keeps the bag off your bag.

Frankly, panniers are just awesome. I wouldn't go back to backpacks.
