    Hi all,

Just here in work and after thinking that if i was let go in the morning the chances of me finding another job would be slim and none because i'm only out of college a year and a half, with a pretty useless degree and no other experience.

So that got me thinking to do an evening course in the autumn... I am thinking of taking an accounts/bookeeping course, although i have no experience in the area. I did accounting as a subject for a year as part of my college course. I have spent a couple of days looking at the different courses and the ones i am thinking of are:

    1) Accountant Technician
    http://www.learn.ie/www/product.asp?pID=8&cID=1
This I know is a good course but I dont know if I should do it when I have no intention of working for an accountant to make it my primary job but then again - never say never

    2)FETAC LEVEL 5 Payroll (Manual & Computerised)
    http://www.dorset-college.ie/accounting_finance/courses/course_details/?rid=1&cid=28
Would this be of much benefit. Are employers still looking for wage clerks?

    3)FETAC LEVEL 5 Accounting (Manual & Computerised)
    http://www.dorset-college.ie/accounting_finance/courses/course_details/?rid=1&cid=27

    4)FETAC LEVEL 5 Bookkeeping (Manual & Computerised)
    http://www.droghedatraining.com/course/bookkeeping-manual-computerised

Definitely thinking of either of the above to......but just wondering which one would be better to do first? What are the prospects of employers wanting someone with these courses done/qualifications.

Are these FETAC Level 5 courses any good? Are they worth the paper they are written on?

Anyone here done either of these courses?? Or any evening class? How'd ya find it? Was there alot of work involved?

I have done both manual accounting and computerised accounts and 4 out of 6 exams for Acca accounting technician. I also don't particulary want to work in the field I just have an interest in it.

I only met people working in the industry that were doing the same courses, they were mostly at entry level positions in large factories. Prospects were good but the money in retail was way more.

If you did accounting before, then the manual side of things is not much use to you. Accounting software is easier to use when you have a map in your head of where each figure should be.

For an accounting technician, the two options seem to be acca or sima accredited courses, I'd love to hear from anyone who did these courses and got a position the that field.

If you want the very basics, look at www.ecollege.ie

Suspect this may be cheaper and more flexible than the others. If you start there, you could get a feel for whether you're interested in the reality of accounts or not.

There do seem to be come jobs out there that want knowledge of computer accounts packages: more are specific to the one that the company is already using though.

That said, no learning is ever wasted.

    Thanks.

Thinking of the Bookeeping (Manual & Computerised) I've done trial balances and all that at college but no harm in brushing up on it i suppose.

Has anyone here tried the FAS e-Courses ?? How did they find them? Do you get much help??
