World Cup 2010 Qualifiers

Hi, Have to discuss this here as i cant get into the soccer forum.
Just a quick one if anyone knows.

In the European qualification groups for the 2010 Soccer World Cup there are 9 groups. 8 of which have 6 teams and 1 of which has 5 teams.

The top 8 best 2nd place qualifiers go into a home and away play-off.

How is this fair on the 2nd placed team in the group with only 5 teams since they will have less a chance of accumulating as many points as the teams with 6 teams in their group.

Is it worked on a pro rata basis that even though they have less points they have a better points per games played average?

Or is it just hard luck that thats the way it is?

in the first 8 groups (Groups 1-8), matches against the teams that finished 6th (bottom) dont count in "the best 2nd place table". In group 9 matches against the 5th placed team(bottom) do count

Good man, couldnt find an answer anywhere!
Looks like Georgia are deffo finishing last, theyre bottom as it is and have Italy, Bulgaria and Montinegro away. Thats a bit of a disaster because Georgia are the only team we have beaten twice already!

    Still on a knife edge

Yeah it would be preferable to have Montenegro bottom as we drew with them.

You'll find the information and the 2nd place ranking table here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification_(UEFA)

Ireland are 6th of 9 and Croatia are bottom tho with a game in hand.
