I wonder if someone could give me some advice here.

Trying to decide whether to go for Sat4free or Freesat.

Anyone have any recommendations? Sat4free seem cheaper but dont have a terrestrial aerial package which we would need too.

    Thanks in advance!

Sat4free is simply the name giving to freesat here in Ireland, the equipment used is exactly the same so whichever is the cheapest route would be what Id recommend...

A cheaper alternative may be a Free to Air Box...which wont give you a 7 day epg but no mater what route you take you will still require and RTE aerial to receive the terrestrial channels.

You can get a good mini ariel in Power City for €18 with long antennae and I get great signals all the time for all the Irish channels; RET 1,2 TG4, TV3 and some other thing. So just go for the cheapest sat I'd say ~

that depends entirely on your location!

FreeSat does not have terrestrial "package" either, as other posters mention, both are basically the same service, same box, different brand and Sat4Free is postcode locked to Ulster, FreeSat can be used with any UK region.

Getting a Teresterial aerial is possible with either box, but they are more FreeSat than Sat4Free installers.

At the end of the day, there is little difference, I would rather a FreeSat box, since ITV/BBC London can be better than the Northern Ireland service, NI someone shows it's own programmes in primetime and primetime shows like "Spooks" are shown at odd hours.

Anyone have any problems ordering from Sat4free?

I rang them last week (15th June) for an installation, they took my details and said an engineer would ring me back to arrange an install. No call from them since. I rang the next day and they said that they would ring back, nothing. Now their website seems to be down...

i have freesat. bought the boxes in argos. i got them in the UK, but you can get them in the north. you can choose which regional variation you receive with freesat. you cannot with sat4free.

oh, and i think freesat is cheaper.

OK, so I have the box (Grundig HD Satellite Receiver). If I get no response from Sat4free, is there an alternative to use with that box? Is it configured to only work with Sat4free? Thanks!

    @arctictree

You could just put up a dish yourself and use the box. the fact that Sat4Free may or may not exist anymore is of no matter. I doubt that there were specific updates just for the sat4free boxes, so as long as the freesat boxes keep updating, you should be fine.

The only difference between sat4free and freesat, apart from cosmetic ones, is the fact that the sat4free boxes are hard coded to the Northern Ireland channels, so 101 = BBC 1 N1, 102 = BBC 2 NI and 103 = UTV.

Just thought I'd update this. Rang Sat4free again yesterday and they called me back immediately saying an installer would be out this morning. So the guy came out, installed the dish and set me up.

I'm very happy now and have all the channels I need. Had to go to work straight after but will spend some time this evening flicking through the channels.

Funny, Sat4free website still seems to be down...

You can use the same dish for Sky & Freesat/Sat4free - they broadcast from the same place. Of course you need extra or spare LNB outputs.
