What choices for under an open fire?

    Hi,

A work colleague has just finished a fireplace, its an open fire, raised about 3 feet from the ground and open to kitchen on one side and sitting room on the other.

Are there choices of base materials to put under the fire?

Is there a "high temp" concrete mix needed/ available for the base?

The fireplace has a nice natural stone surround built up to roof height so an option of a cast iron/ stone base would be great but neither he nor I have any idea if these are available.

    Anyone can advise?

    Thanks!

    Steve
