To start this off from what rok on said before - anyone up for one some evening this week? The dublin city council cycling evening is on wednesday.

Yes. On Tuesday evening I am cycling from Dublin at about 6pm and meeting Gearoid in Swords about 7pm. Then we'll be cycling towards Garristown and then back southwards towards Phoenix Park by back roads and doing a circuit of the park or something. By then it will probably be getting dark.

I am planning on starting midweek evening rides. My usual route is Clonsilla-Dundrum-Sally Gap-Saggart-Lucan-Clonsilla.

    There are several challenges:

    1. The amount of daylight is really affected by weather conditions. If it's overcast the daylight goes much earlier.

    2. The time constraints require good discipline for group spins, i.e. start times, no stopping, decent pace.

Last bank holiday I was at SG at about 21:15, and it was fine, but descending into the setting sun was a bit dodgy (cars coming up behind would have diffculty seeing me, and I wouldn't hear them at 50kph+).

For those that work in town (I assume this thread is Dublin-centric!) it might be easier to go straight from work if that's possible (it is for me).

You can go up SG via Edmontown road or Stoking late from Clonsilla rather than going up to Dundrum. It's only 17 or km away if you cycle through Crumlin.

Please maam, may I have a route map?

Good idea, anyone for tomorrow? Starting from 5:15 from City Center? Don't really mind the route (would prefer though going south).

Here - That's roughly the route I take, going via the Ph park sometimes, Via the strawberry beds some other times, makes no real diference, as long as you reach the SCR up to Crumlin.

+1 on Carolines route. It is a better route for training IMO, than Dundrum. More climbing sooner. Also. You could always turn off and head up Bohernabreena and head up to either the SG or Ballysmuttan that way.

I have often wondered why Boards spins dont start at point F on Carolins map, on the basis of wider choice of route.

On evening spins, are lights recommended?

I'm not sure I'd want to head straight up Stocking Lane after sitting around for half an hour. ;)

My big, heavy LED torches tend to get dislodged on the crappy surface over Sally Gap. Last time I just used a small front flasher and two bright LED rears (one flashing, one constant).

I really must get around to buying a Fenix.

I'd be on for this some evenings alright. I could go from Clonsilla at around 5:30/40, up towards SallyGap and then I'd turn off for Blessington and Naas. Hmm.. better makes sure I have a bit of a feed before I leave work actually

Another +1, point F is usually the point I aim for on non-boards spins, either that or near Butterfield Avenue out to Bohernabreena as ROK_ON says. I very rarely go through Dundrum unless on a boards spin or going to Enniskerry.

I'd say lights are definitely a good idea on an evening spin. I got caught out coming back from Laragh across the SG last year. Cycled in darkness from the crossroads on the SG. Had no lights with me, nor did my friend. There was moonlight, but descending off SG at a crawl was no fun.

    +1 Totally agree !!!

    So 5:15 from city centre?

Joe the Bastard says after 8pm it doesn't look good: http://www.accuweather.com/ukie/forecast-hourly.asp?partner=accuweather&postalcode=wicklow&metric=1&hbhday=2&hbhhour=16

joe said the same about today too though....

just popped out to sutton for a lil cruise, my god i hate commuters/runners/people cycling 3 across who don't move in........

(commuters in this sence referring to cyclists who commute who show no manners while cycling, or obey traffic law's, not cyclists who commute on their bikes... i need a more accurate term)

This is looking a bit ominous:
    WEB_radar_200906161215.gif

Would be on for a spin preferably up Wicklow way but flexible. Joe reckons rain only at 9pm.

@Astra and Donal - 5:15 from city centre? Which way you planning on heading- I would be leaving from Ranelagh around 5:00.

Would love to go out, but the route doesn't suit me.

I mentioned on saturday my morning/afternoon spins to a few people, if anyone fancies a spin, I'm around most of the time, PM me and I'll head out. Wicklow via Enniskerry is my route.

Looks like a good route. Is "B" significant? I could meet you there- what sort of time. I'll be coming from Ranelagh so cycling along Willbrook/Ballyboden Road. I'll PM you my phone number.

I'll be heading out myself tomorrow (any time suits) and Friday (morning/day) for some distance spins. I won't be going to fast, my avg is usually 26/27km/h, but will be going a lot slower as I need to build up distance/endurance before the ROK.
I'm on the northside, so I'll probably be doing this route Northside (posted in another thread by someone) starting from beaumont-fairview-clontarf and joining the map at sutton cross.

Its a good route as anyone who gets tired can turn back at R129/R122 junction (about halfway).

Nice spin last night although it was very windy once up the mountains. Wind seemed to be against us no matter which way we turned. Stocking Lane - Viewing Point - Sally Gap - Lugalla - Djouce - Enniskerry - Scalp. Quite the dramatic descent off Djouce, with the tailwind I reckon a speed record could have been broken if I had my contacts in and could have got down more aero. As it is I had to take my right hand off the bars at 79km/h to gesture at a guy in a Merc pulling out in front of me, was looking right at him and him at me but he really didn't look like he was going to stop. After that more drama with a puncture and a mini-crash from my companions. I think we have all over-cooked a corner at one point or another, good that no harm was done. A few minutes after Donal went into the ditch another guy on a road bike did exactly the same thing.

Sounds a tricky corner, one to be aware of. Which one was it?

I had to break when i saw him try run you over, only got up to 76km/hr still though after all the slog up SG it certainly was fun :)

It's not really that tricky if you are used to it but we were all going very fast at the time :)
