    Auckland's 'historic' bid for Carter

    Sun, 14 Jun 2009 12:14

Ace All Black pivot Dan Carter is set to sign a NZ$ 400 000 (ZAR 2.1 million) deal with Auckland which will see him run out for the Blues in next year's Super 14.

After a disappointing Super 14 campaign in 2009, the Blues have tabled the biggest offer in New Zealand's professional rugby history, as they attempt to build towards a successful 2010 campaign.

According to reports, the Auckland Rugby Union will pay NZ $250,000, while another NZ$ 150,000 is thought to be a third-party arrangement. His offer is almost four times as much as most top All Blacks earn on their provincial contracts.

Carter, who is off-contract with Canterbury, held a press conference on Friday after returning form his short-lived French sojourn but he fended off questions about his future.

Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder did not even try to persuade Carter to return to Christchurch as it appears hopeless trying to persuade him to stay after the massive Auckland deal.

The New Zealand Herald reports that he has all but signed with the Blues which will see him pair with another returned All Black, Luke McAlister.

Where did Auckland get that kind of money for DC??

182,561.07 euro. How much did Munster pay for Doug Howlett? And Nick Williams?

That's not exactly much money is it...

This isn't a criticism of ROG, but am I the only here amazed at how much less the best out-half in the world earns than Ronan O'Gara. And they wonder why people go North...

Too bad the Blues have a rubbish pack and some very bad backs. Personally dunno why NZU didn't get Carter to Otago Chiefs and switch Donald from there to the Blues would make much more sense to me.

@Joe remember NZ isn't the most affluent country in the world, selling sheep only gets you so far

    Yeah, I know, dude...

It's kinda sad though, because it makes it difficult for them to keep their best players.

Where does the money go in the Southern Hempisphere? Earnings aren't a patch on the NH. Do they plung it all into Currie Cup ect to bolster the game right down through unlike here. I know commercially its not as succesful as here but come on, Carter could get at least double in France or even here if the PAG allowed it.

Well Auckland is by far the most populous area in NZ, and on the subject of affluence, the richest too. It's a long time since the days of Zinzan Brooke, Jonah Lomu, Carlos Spencer, and the Super 12 Triumphs. Maybe the NZRU see a huge market there, that can be stimulated with a return to success. And maybe Carter will be the first of a few high profile moves. Who knows?

Same could be said for Cowen and Obama, What is it they say about fools (us) and their money?

It is however funny or more accurate how crazy soccer has gotten to think you can pay a top class rugby player for a year on what a top class soccer player gets in a week/forth night. Maddness.

Where his GF is from (or lives).

Probably makes sense in a way.

Quite a wage drop, but I'm sure he gets good sponsorship

Jeez, the rest of the ABs must be on crap wages (comparatively) - like €50,000 or so. Anyone know if they have a central contract as well that would increase this? Still amazing that more of them don't go north to earn decent money...

He'll be back in Europe after the World Cup. The reason he is returning is to play wih the All Blacks.

Slightly off target there, there are no transfer fees in rugby, the 94mill your quoting is the transfer fee for Mr Ronaldo. However his wages will be 100k per week or more. Its not inconceivable that he could earn more per week than DC does in one year!

Football's infinitely more popular than rugby though. Also you need to be a hell of a lot better to make it at the top of football than you do rugby.

If you look at England, the number of rugby players in the thousands. The number of footballers is in the millions.

There are some? Leinster I think paid like a 100k to buy out Reddan's contract didn't they? And didn't Munster have to pay to keep Warwick?

Ronaldo a pussy? I may not like the guy, but he's phyiscally very powerful, and definitely neither a coward nor a pushover. Diving in football is equivalent to cheating at the breakdown in rugby. Cheating is neither manly nor 'girly.' It merely expresses a desire to win.

His current deal is worth 350K per year, but that's not including performance bonuses and of course ads. 500K wouldn't strike me as being far off the real figure.

Ah so your including ROG's sponsorship deals in your figure but left this out for Dan Carter who is probably the most marketable player in the world...

As anyone knows one must compare like with like and when they are both retired I would guess that Dan Cartier to have alot more money in the bank than ROG. So I feel sorry for him...?? No way!

It's what I was led to believe it to be. Whether I can trust who I heard that from is another thing.

    It sounds believable though.

Got to remember cost of living. Dublin ranked something like 16th most expensive in world and Auckland around 78th. $400k NZ is a nice home in Auckland and an even nicer one in Christchurch.
