iTunes freezing

my itunes runs fine if I start my computer with the ipod disconnected,but the second I connect it it freezes, If I have it connected on startup it restores,wiping the memory,the message says to wait for the iPod to restart but it doesn't,the actual iPod works fine,but the memory has been wiped. Sorry if that made no sense,
