Best bet is to try a few set mate and see which ones your comfortable with. Try pick up a second hand set in your pro shop. ;)

See if you can find a 2nd hand set.

Otherwise Wilsons are quite good value.

It's depends on your budget and handicapp, but either way I'd definately recommend you get a custom fit, they'll have all the top brands and more and you'll get to hit balls with them all.

I just bought a set of them today.

Looking forward to getting out for a round with them.

A lot of the decent golf shops have 6 irons of the latest gear that u can take away and try. Go in and ask for 3 or 4 of them to try out, something is bound to tickle your fancy and help your game. After you've tried them out, be cheeky and try and source them 2nd hand on ebay.

Keep an eye on the bargain bags, I was looking for a set of blades (because the sit nicely behind the ball) and ended up seeing a set of Mizuno mx-23 for 300. These were practically brand new! With a bit of bargaining I got them down to 250!

    Best investment I ever made!

try and source them 2nd hand on ebay.

Be careful with Ebay. There are a lot of copies about. Some may be good but others may be poor quality (I haven't bought any so I can't comment further).

Depends on your handicap and what you are trying to achieve. Golf Digest, etc have annual reviews for irons in different ranges, i.e. beginners, improvers, low handicap, etc.

I used this last year with referance to mates off a similar handicap and went for the Mizuno MX 19s. The were great for me (off 20) and got me down to 19 for a while. Again this was fine for me but if you are a lower handicap then blades, etc might be a better bet.

I wouldn't recommend blades for anyone other than the very low handicap. Even then it's not mandatory.

I was in Halfpenny golf in Swords last week and they had a second hand set of R7 irons in good nick for 200, never checked the shafts to see what they were as I'm not in the market for new irons but it just struck me as good value if they suited.

How do you know that he doesn't need stiff or x-stiff?

most golfers slice the ball. if the shaft is too stiff you will slice it more and lose distance. clubhead speed with a 5 iron should be over 90mph to use stiff shafts

I opened a thread similar to this a day or so ago...I bought a set of Wilson DI 7`s. Absouloutly love them bought them in Half penny swords.

Edit oh and by the way I would be a very High handicap infact don`t I don`t even have one yet as I`m only paying green fees (yet to make that step but will shortly) I`m playing for over a year now had a set of Spalding before these theres some difference I can tell ya!!!

It's a fair bet. Not many people have a swing speed fast enough to use stiff shafts.
