Importance of a good rhythm

Went up to the driving range to try and sort out my driving - which has been very erratic for the last while. My swing is very quick and so I thought I better try and slow it down a bit and focus on getting everything "moving together" rather than trying to "burst it." Couldn't believe the results - I didn't lose any distance (if anything the ball was going further) but my swing felt so nice and easy. Of course I had heard about the importance of a good rhythm before, but I think I've got a new appreciation for it. This mightn't affect my scoring much but my back will certainly be thankful if I can keep the pace a little slower!
Having been bitten in the arse by golf quite a few times I'm sure I'll fall to pieces trying to find a nice rhythm the next time I play :D

If you want to be consistent then rhythm is vital.. You sometimes also hear it called timing. The results are that you'll hit the ball with ease and in the middle of the club.

Think of using only 80% of your max every shot and only hit 100% when you have to hit a long drive.

Slowing your swing down is one thing, getting your timing right is another. You can still hit the ball consistantly swinging fast if your timing is right.

Having good timing can make up for an awful amount of bad things in your swing, most lessons given these days focus purely on positions in the swing. The funny thing is that there is no one proper way to swing the club (just watch Jim Furyk!)

For the best example of rhythm and effortless power, just watch David Duval

    Best swing in recent years!!

I haven't had the opportunity to play or practice as much in the last two years due to the arrival of my second kid. So I built a bay out the back. I'm winning in every way now, as I can nip out for 30 mins or so each evening when the kids are watching TV, or having a bath etc. I do'nt have to travel to the range anymore, most nights anyway the range is full of hackers and guys who just want to hit balls for the laugh.
My rhythm has improved again, and I feel like I can compete once more. When I go to the course to play in competitions, it doesn't take me long to get into the round as a result. I firmly believe in muscle memory, and repetition of the swing is fundamental to that.

I recently bought an Eyeline Metronome on Ebay for about €15. It's specially designed for golf and I've found it brilliant for my rhythm, especially my putting which has greatly improved.
Have a look on their website.

I always thought rhytm was a natural process.
Like you OP, i too have a fast overall swing, so I slowed down the whole lot tonight and found the same.
I found I was a lot more relaxed on the tee,and actually got that "piiinnng" going regularly.
I'm beginning to think rhytm and timing can be learned!
