First I'll admit to knowing nothing about buying cars form the north, VRT and so on. Second, I'm not planing on buying one from there, I've just noticed alot more cars with the english reg number plate around.

So I'm wondering when you buy a car and register it here what happens to the number plate?

If you are asking what happens when you register a UK car in Ireland for the first time then the answer is that the UK plate becomes redundant......Is that what you are asking?

I'm not sure what I'm asking, I'm just confused. But, what do you mean by redundant?

You take it off and throw it away; and put on your Irish one.

Thanks, so then these one's I've seen (some more than once). Have they not put on there Irish plate yet or (maybe more likely) have not paid vrt, tax and most likily have no insurance.

Maybe but the place I'm in isn't very touristy and I've seen some of these around the place a good few weeks apart.

Tourists, returning emigrants, all sorts of possibilities. My Irish reg is regularly seen around Britain at non touristy times...
