Currently Acting Up VP- both positives and negatives to the job IMO

    Positives:
    Sense of achievement
Having a more active role in decision and policy making
You get to meet students you never even knew existed!!

    Negatives:
    Long hours
    Working through breaks
Covering for sick (non certified ) colleagues due to cut backs on S & S

In our school, the staff are very giving of their time and will always assist when asked, there is great goodwill and this makes the job easier.

One would need to be organied, computer literate helps as does the use of excel

Try maynooth. Pdst do a thing too can't remember the name of it, it's offered in maynooth and in various education centres.

I know theyre fussy about not starting new threads around here but 4 year old ones are a bit much!

Well I have done both DP and P jobs in few places and DP is a great role once you realise there is a bit of battles the odd time but once you handle people correctly, you'll be fine. Its very satisfying but make sure you won't miss teaching too much.

Long hours: it all depends on you, I find I can work a normal day and not take anything home with me unless its urgent. having said that, I don't take lunch break etc. And you really get to know everyone in the school plus you will find out about sewage pits, water supplies, boiler problems, all the cobwebs in the school, climbing into attics etc etc, not to mention sting operations to catch dossers and smokers.....

If it's primary you are talking about it's the best job you could get! Principal gets all the flak, buck stops with him/her, DP keeps low profile (so low in our place half parents don't know he has the role!!) and collects his wages. Prob a very different and more demanding role in secondary from what I see in schools around us.
