Laptop, screen blacks out...

    The laptop at home has bed having this problem for a while now, in that the screen goes completely black for no apparent reason, then at a random time will come back to normal. It is a Compaq Presario V8000 running vista, 2gb RAM, 160gb hd and has no known viruses on it. It is my brother's laptop, has lots of music and pictures etc he would like to keep so he cant get rid of it, yet since the screen seems to be out of commission right now he cant retrieve the files either...is there anything worth trying you guys could suggest?

    Use a light, and check closely to see if the entire screen is blanking or if its just the backlight. It'll look like a really dark gameboy if the latter is true.

    Oh its definately the whole screen, it does this wierd thing where it'll come back a bit, sort of glow into whiteness then black out again. I'll try that thing with the light though. Oh if a mod could note this into the laptops forum i'd appreciate it...didnt know there was one:)
