A simple dumpy level will do the trick and a reference point (Benchmark) of a known level. Do you know if the level is to an ordinance datum level or a local datum?

The butt of a tree sounds a bit arbitary but if it is a defined level then you can use this info to set out the level of your floor using a dumpy level which can be hired frommost plant hire places. Use of a level is straight forward setting it up is the awkward bit.

The best online help i can find is here.
