I just saw an ad for Sky's HD service on one of the standard definition satellite channels. The quality of the picture for the duration of the ad was superb... so why can't they have it that way all the time?

The quality is the same. The rain in the background or whatever, is slowed down and enhanced to capture your attention

It's just trickery I'm afraid. The resolution is the exact same as normal. The slowmo and whatever else they use gives the illusion of higher definition. It's very cleverly done.

EDIT: I think they use Mode 7. /nerd

I also thought it was stupid, when they were advertising DVDs on video and showing how clear the picture could be, even though it was still on video!!!

While my own Cable Hi Def runs reportedly at 720p you still get wild pixelation when there is heavy motion on screen, such as in an action flick. Im afraid I still get better quality through torrenting than I do payperview.

    No, its the source feed.

I've a 40" 100Hz 1080p/i Samsung and using a direct HD streaming service and it 100x better then anything NTL/Sky can provide.

I was chatting to someone about this last night in the pub. The adverts are highly effective. Sure, the effect is faked, but Sky have managed to highlight the advantages of HD on standard definition TV sets, which is something of a feat.

back in the early 80s, Sony were doing adverts for their Trinitron TVs - the advert consisted of a nice chap from Sony telling us that Trinitron was great but he couldn't show us the picture as it would just loook crappy on our shoddy non-Trinitron TV sets. They were making their point well but they were still selling something you couldn't see on your TV.

Sky's advertising house have overcome that particular sales problem, they make HD look good. And on the crappy TV sets:) Seriously, that's something of an achievement.

Pfft. If you can see it then that's all that matters for me regardless of how highly defined the film/sport etc claims to be.

Because of the difference in signal types. Your TV/mon might handle a different refresh rate on DVI than it does on something else. 720 or 1080 over HDMI is often 24Hz. Your torrents would be displayed at a higher refresh then. Anyway I don't know your setup thats why I used the wording I did. OK? I didn't "assume" anything. I only said MAY.

This is the HE Video Displays forum isn't it??:D

Ah now you can't beat a bit of talking about what girls you'd do and then have one of them overhear and give you a slap.
