Is signing for card transactions still allowed?

I was traveling through Dublin airport during the week and made a purchase in the duty free shop. The got me to sign for the transaction instead of putting in my pin. The next customer did the same, in fact I didn't even see a pin pad to use. Is this still allowed? I thought they had to always have you enter your pin now?

Also, I used my Laser card but on my statement it says Maestro - has Laser been replaced in Ireland now?

i was in a reputable clothes shop off o'connell street (dublin) recently and paid by visa. The sales assistant couldnt get the card to scan in the machine properly (or so he advised me), and he asked me to sign for the purchase instead. AFAIK both methods are allowed.

Yeah I've done that before, if my card didn't work for some reason - but they never even tried my pin.

Its up to the retailer iirc, but its in there interest to use the chip and pin to prevent fraud.

It's perfectly acceptable. Hell, if the retailer wants, you don't have to do either. The purpose of the PIN/Signature is fraud prevention (to prove that it is the rightful cardholder). Chip & PIN is now the standard and best. Most shops will only accept card transactions with Chip and PIN. But a few (at their own risk) also offer Signature verifications.

Maestro is the newer, better system and most banks are using it. Am with AIB who moved all customers over to Maestro a few years ago (card has both the Maestro and Laser logos).

Some retailers have chosen to stick with signing, but they are liable for any fraud, whereas with pin verified transactions, the card issues (or the card holder) is liable for any fraud.

Yes, most all laser cards are now co-branded as Maestro and the laser brand will be removed in a while.
