    Victories for Joyce and O'Neill

David Oliver Joyce and Darren O'Neill maintained Ireland's winning start to the European Union Championships after recording two last-16 victories at the Odense Sports Centre in Odense, Denmark on Tuesday afternoon.

Joyce, who is defending the gold medal he won in Poland last year, came from behind to beat Danish featherweight Denis Ceylan 11-8.

The St Michael's Athy man, who forced Ceylan into a standing count in the third, will now meet England's Ian Weaver in tomorrow's quarter-finals.

O'Neill, meanwhile, had his hand raised in victory when Turkish middleweight Ulus Kaya was retired by his corner after taking a standing count after being floored by a second round left hook from the Paulstown, Kilkenny clubman.

O'Neill was 4-0 up when the bout was stopped.

John Joe Nevin and Philip Sutcliffe will be involved in last-16 bouts later on Tuesday, while Ken Egan meets Sweden's Eric Skoglund in an 81Kg quarter-final.

If Egan wins he will be guaranteed at least a bronze medal, adding to the three gold, one silver and one bronze he has claimed at EU level since 2002.

Ireland celebrated five wins on the trot at the European Union Championships in Denmark tonight.

There were last 16 wins for defending EU champions David Oliver Joyce and John Joe Nevin also, Nevin beating Poland's Mateusz Mazik 13-1in a repeat of the 2008 EU final in Poland which Nevin also won.
Meanwhile, Darren O'Neill and Philip Sutcliffe took the early route to victory, both boxers advancing after inside the distance wins.
Nevin meanwhile, is facing a tough task tomorrow as he faces English European champion Luke Campbell with a place in the bantamweight semi final up for grabs.
Today's verdicts maintains Ireland's 100% winning start to the Championships.

Nevin v Campbell should be the best fight there. I saw Campbell winning the Euros and he looked talented but I dont think Nevin has anything to be scared of.
Egan v Szello is a fight between two very experienced boxers and both will give away nothing there.
Danny Price of England (a former "victim" of Mike Perez) will test Sheehan strongly and probably have the edge.
and my personal favourite Sutcliffe has his work cut out against Legowski.

Campbell will be a great scalp for Nevin. I seen Campbell a couple of times, including his win in the Euro's in Liverpool. Good fighter, but Nevin has the style to cause him problems

Absolutely amazing, think about it all boxers are going to medal in the European Championships and what’s the bets the papers (i.e Irish Times) will barely pick up on it. Ireland have a world class squad of boxers and just think of the boxers that are left at home, Paddy Barnes, Roy Sheehan, Eamonn O’Kane, Ross Hickey, John Joe Joyce, up and coming boxers like Ray Moylette, Joe Ward and that’s not to mention World Champion Katie Taylor. The sport does not get the recognition through media or general public attention that it deserves. This is a sport Ireland for its size and population over achieve in, and long may it last.

    Brilliant achievement, well done lads!

minor note that its the EU not European championships. Many countries dont send their full teams to this tournament.

Great stuff from the lads. Nevin's win is superb considering that Campbell is the Euro
champ and Sutcliffe is not just a big hitter either. Saunders is a tough and hard guy who can be hit, and clean. I wonder will he take Sutcliffe's power shots?
