Dell bought out Alienware just under 3 years ago, & thats important to remember. Alienware have their own factories, management, etc. I would not put them down so quickly, plus they build their machines in Athlone . Besides that, have you had an Alienware machine before? If not, please do not put them down unless you have direct experience. Thanks.

Have you not seen the prices they charge for upgrades, and even base packages?

The prices are high but the machines are built to an extreme high standard. There are other companies out there like the new Commodore Gaming machines that offer services like Alienware.

Alienware is the jewel of the crown for high tech gaming machines, so they are priced accordly to get the last bit of extra juice out and for the laptops to last for years. Remember a typical laptop life-span is 3 years before the hardware begins to fall apart (you can go 5 years but just about!)

By all means I am just pointing out that if the person wants high-end laptops better than PC world (and last longer), Alienware is just one example of many out there. Others are priced lower and are still good machines.

I don't want to hi-jack the trend about Alienware, please keep posting other links ! :)

They use the same parts as Dell, but charge a whole lot more. Terrible value TBH. Better off saving alot of cash and getting a Dell for half the price. Laptops aren't really upgradable and outdate quicker than desktops

Yep. I had one a few years ago. Absolutely rubbish value for money.

I would not buy a Dell Laptop, even if it was the last option. Search Dell Laptops on YouTube where you can see many examples of their laptops blowing up even at their own conferences ! But each to their own, thankfully the Dell Support now has the option to call through to Scotland, instead having no choice to their "other" call centers. So a plus on that for Dell.

Dell did not put in their own hardware parts into Alienware, infact it is the other way around. When Alienware was acquired, within months Dell announced their brand new range of Dell high-power machines, which are still their flagship brand of today but are cheaper versions of Alienware hardware and such is why I have been saying to take a closer look at between Dell & Alienware. If you like Dell high-tech Laptops, they come from cheaper hardware versions from Alienware. Alienware would not in the past & still does not use cheaper hardware, so you know when you buy an Alienware, you get what you pay for. Otherwise there would never have been a market for Alienware to startup in the first place, along with others. Dell could not compete, they brought Alienware out & Dell does not buy out alot, they crush competitors and that is why Alienware is a strong brand that they have thankfully not messed around with but to mess with their own Dell laptops with Alienware tech.

Respect man! I do like your questions ;) After all, when getting a Laptop, you got to get the best and you are 100% right that they do not last as long as Desktops, hard to upgrade ,etc. I am just trying to help because i know Alienware and yes their Laptops do last a very long time, great support service, quality built & the price is high but if I was getting another laptop, I would make sure it will last for 3+ years, more so if it is a high-tech version needed.

For the recorded, I also have Sony Laptop and while its not leading edge stuff, it is one of the most solid laptops I have used in a long time (apart from Alienware).

Its common fact that Alienware (even before they where bought out) are horribly overpriced, and that you can get something that does the same for quite a bit less.

Your essentially paying for a brand name.

OP, have a look at Dell, they sometimes have great bargains or www.dabs.ie, www.elara.ie, www.hardwareversand.de, Komplett.ie.

eBay has some great bargains aswell, just make sure you only buy from a proper shop seller.

I completely agree with you are essentially paying for a brand name :)
Komplett.ie is a pretty good company to note too

That was a Sony battery in a Dell that blew up, not Dells fault

Dell don't make hardware, they buy in the processors, ram, hard drives, graphics cards, dvd and bluray drives etc,.......the same ones that go in Alienware

I've had one before. They're a grat macjine but massively overpriced. Also, once my motherboard went, I was fuxored. They had none and were unhelpful in my quest to source one. When I finally tracked down the crowd that made them, they informed me that they stopped manafacturing them the year after I had bought my machine. So, it was nice to know that they were charging top dollar for a machine that had 'almost' obsolete parts in it.

Not sure what they're like since Dell took over, but I can't imagine they've improved.
Also, they're either gone from Athlone (to Poland) or about to go. Leaving the call centre there though.

That's certainly helpful information about alienware and I was looking at them but I haven't got that much for one,

My budget is about €1250 for a laptop, I'm looking for a good graphics card ( preferably nvidia) a good processor ( prefer intel core 2 duo or quadcore)
I'd like it to come with 64 bit but proccesors I mentioned are 64 bit compat, so I can always Install myself, but also want high ram 4 gb +

I know it prob sounds like alot but I have seen some that have it for less than my budget but they've all been in the us and no shipping available
Dabs and elara seem to be more aimed towards businesses,

I was looking on komplett and they have some very good spec msi laptops but I haven't read good things about them, anyone any opinions?
