I recently bought a meta 5.5.2- I would not know if it is a great bike but it gets great write ups, another boardsie has one.
I used merlin too - good service.

I know a good few serious mtb'ers with them. great bike. you'll have no worries with them. i heard that its best picking ones they have in stock as they can be fierce slow for others or custom builds.

thanks for the info lads, before i go ahead and lash out the credit card is there anything better available, i'll prefer a better fork and i've heard the suntours are a bit iffy, one can be good and another crap. I can spend about €500- 550,

have a look at this bike.
better gear and fork than commencal.

i peob would favour the giants over commencal. giant have a great frame and good positioning.

allow about £50-60 for shipping for these lads.

i bought mine there about 2 years ago and had no hassle with them.

( i have no links with them at all but they seem to have good prices and you can find a few 2007 range bikes which will be great and well reduced )

A buddy of mine has one of these and is very impressed with it, just done ballyhoura brown trail (still early days) and it handled well but the tires that come with it are more wet winter tires. lovely looking bike and great spec. spend that money.

thanks for the info lads i've email merlin with a few questions so i'll see what they say
Davgtrek: good site and nice bikes you linked to but they all come in over budget, should have bought when the sterling was weak.

bonnieprince: how does your friend find the size of the commencal? i read somewhere online that they come up a bit small? the medium size is only 17" which is what i'm after i reckon 5.9 in height

there is a delivery charge of £60 sterling, which kinda negates the fact that its such a bargain, any other recommendations out there please.

This one here would just be only just over budget - give them a call and you might be able to haggle the price down: http://www.realcycles.com/products.php?plid=m1b0s2p1563
