Sherdog Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings

    Heavyweight

    1. Fedor Emelianenko (30-1, 1 NC)
It almost seems like ages ago that Emelianenko was facing criticism over his level of competition. Affliction’s “Trilogy” on Aug. 1 will mark Emelianenko’s third straight bout against a former UFC champion, as he takes on Josh Barnett in their long-awaited heavyweight clash.

    2. Josh Barnett (24-5)
The Ts are crossed and the Is are dotted. Barnett will finally take on Fedor Emelianenko on Aug. 1 at Affliction “Trilogy” in yet another marquee heavyweight showdown for MMA in the coming months.

    3. Frank Mir (12-3)
A knee injury postponed Mir’s matchup with Brock Lesnar in May. Now, the UFC’s interim heavyweight champion will seek to unify both versions of the promotion’s title when he rematches Lesnar at UFC 100 on July 11.

    4. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (31-5-1, 1 NC)
Whether it will wind up being the fight for which fans had long hoped remains to be seen, but two of the sport’s most enduring icons will square off at UFC 102 in August when Nogueira finally meets up with Randy Couture.

    5. Brock Lesnar (3-1)
The former World Wrestling Entertainment star got a bit of bad news when his UFC heavyweight title rematch with Frank Mir was postponed due to injury. Lesnar will get the chance to become the lone undisputed UFC heavyweight king come July 11 when the two meet again at UFC 100.

    6. Randy Couture (16-9)
His bout with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is long overdue. Hopefully, when “The Natural” and “Minotauro” square off at UFC 102 in August, the clash of heavyweight legends will not prove past its expiration date.

    7. Brett Rogers (10-0)
Few would have denied that his heavy hands gave him a chance against Andrei Arlovski, but Rogers took his opportunity and ran with it against the former UFC champion. It took Rogers just 22 seconds to turn out the lights on the Belarusian, setting up an Aug. 15 date with Alistair Overeem for Strikeforce’s heavyweight title.

    8. Andrei Arlovski (15-7)
Despite having knocked off the likes of Fabricio Werdum, Ben Rothwell and Roy Nelson in the recent past, those accomplishments now seem like distant memories for Arlovski. “The Pitbull” has been brutally smashed in his last two outings against Fedor Emelianenko and Brett Rogers, and conversation now centers on the fragile chin that has betrayed him again.

    9. Shane Carwin (11-0)
Just when it looked as if he were on the ropes, Carwin folded Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 96. The victory gave the touted heavyweight prospect his 11th stoppage win in as many fights.

    10. Alistair Overeem (29-11, 1 NC)
With Brett Rogers’ 22-second smashing of Andrei Arlovski, Overeem’s first Strikeforce title defense may now be a tad more daunting. Another freak hand injury notwithstanding, “The Demolition Man” will risk his title against Rogers on Aug. 15.

Other contenders: Junior dos Santos, Jeff Monson, Ben Rothwell, Tim Sylvia, Fabricio Werdum.

    * With the addition of Brett Rogers and his own inactivity, formerly eighth-ranked Tim Sylvia falls outside the top 10.

Does anyone else think this list is incredibly stupid? Cant argue with Fedor too much but having Josh 2nd

    Brett Rogers :D
    same goes for Barnett

Then no real problem with the rest maybe Lesner ahead of Nog but just barely.

    Barnett at 2 is bizarre.

    No major objection to Rogers

    Ahead of Overeem though?

I try not to pay attention to any rankings

I think cain valesquez will be up there if he beats congo.
Does anyone else think the logical choice for no1 contender should be the winner of this to face carwin to decide?

I dont have any major problem with that list. Barnett has not fought any high level competion since monson but id still think hes probably the second best heavyweight in the world. I would like to see overeem a bit higher and rogers a bit lower though..

Rankings cant really be taken too seriously anyway as they are so subjective.

I'm pretty sure that the winner of Nogueira vs Couture will be getting the next title shot

Your missing the OP's point....they don't have Lesnar second after his grand total of 4 fights including one loss...it's a conspiracy.

*awaits typical everyone hates Brock because he was a pro wrestler response*:rolleyes::rolleyes:

That was wasn’t my point at all. I wouldn’t go out of my way to make the case for him to higher than he already is until after the Mir fight.

When have I ever made that point about Brock exactly? You are really over estimating my Brock fandom. Your post is completely without merit and a borderline attack on me.

I didn't get that at all. How can you rank Brock above Mir? You're just making stuff up about rovert

given the criteria they have discussed ad nauseum on teir radio shows it makes sense - arlovski got steam rolled by rodgers (if arlovsli got anything off in the fight he could and should have won but he didnt) so he needs do go ahead of him in the rankings & its funny as im just catching up on this weeks shows and they weere saying how they expected to have people crying over these rankings

barnett has done everything he can considering the competition available to him - sure he hasnt fought a genuine top ranked fighter since shockwave 06 but i do see the arguement for him having a high place -if not fully agree with it i see the logic. you could also argue that lesnar is too high as he has one legitimate quality min over a fighter (46 this month) who weighs maybe 60lbs less than him but then on the other hand some will argue and i think you could argue for lesnar ahead of nog

ratings are subjective & your going to annoy everyone in some way when you make them o if they upset you ignore them

Maybe they are trying to hype a fight with Fedor V Barnett.

    My top three.

    Fedor
    Mir
    Lesnar

I'd also have Carwin higher on the list

Barnett is always nuthugged, and while he is a good fighter - he's lucky to be in the top 10. Until he fights in the UFC, he's not proving much by having a tough time with the likes of Gilbert Yvel.

I take everything Ive said about Josh back:

    http://www.fightopinion.com/2009/06/16/afflictions-pr-description-of-josh-barnett/
With his chiseled jaw and Mr. Incredible looks, Josh “The Babyfaced Assassin” Barnett could be the leading man in a Hollywood film or a character straight out of the anime that he loves so much. He has a superhero frame—at 6’3”, 250 pounds, one can almost picture the “Babyfaced Assassin” wrapped in a cape, standing atop a tall building, scanning the city below for any evil doers. He is a well-spoken, charismatic figure whose persona is as compelling as his impressive fight record.

    :D
