They're use for firing sabot slugs out of shotguns which otherwise have smooth barrels. Fire a sabot slug out of a smoothbore and it's gonna go all over the shop. So rather than get a fully rifled shotgun barrel (an Irish legal nightmare), you get a rifled choke and that performs the same function. It's not quite as effective, but it works.

the slugs are illegal unless you get a permit for them

    Nope restricted!!
And anyone got an idea how to apply for restricted slugs or other ammo??
If you were applying for a 21X67.5mm rifle would that ease the confusion somwhat?;)
Or a paradox rifle/shotgun? Kind of an Irish dilemma.

9mm and other pistol ammo is on the restricted list as well, so that might prove an interesting question down the road

but actually i dont think you need rifling? on the slugs there are grooves in a sort of twist design which are there too impart spin, thus stabilising them?

Afraid not, first of all, he said Sabot slugs, which obvious have no groves.
Secondly, apparently the grooves are there to friction, as well as impart spin. (there are two types of "grooved" slugs so the grooves act slightly on each)

Was looking this up lads. The Sabot slug does NOT need grooves at all!
It's quite detrimental to them.Think on this one;The Abrahms and Leopard 2 Main battle tanks fire a 120mm Sabot slug made from depleted uranium, and they are both smoothbore cannon.
The secret of the sabots accruacy is the clean seperation of the cladding when it leaves the muzzle of the gun or cannon. This allows the slug to accelerate to its super velocity. Check out this link to Sauvestere shotgun ammo
    www.sauvestre.tm.fr/index_us.htm
As for the grooved Brennecke slug. This is actually to work as a gas check in the barrel. As the slug travels down the barrel, the grooves collapse onto the slug and make it fit tighter into a choked barrel[Yes you can use them with full choke guns].It does impart a certain amount of spin, but not enough for any accruacy.
[2] it is a holdover from the original Brennecke big game rifle of the 19century.That had some very light grooving and the slug was supposed to mate with them as it travelled down the barrel.
You will also find this in the "paradox " gun. A smoothbore with the last 6 or 12 ins rifled to give the old Brennecke a bit of spin.
Thats all the modern slug choke is doing, revamping an old concept for improving accruacy on what amounts to a advanced musket ball.:)
