Deer hunting with 22-250 and the NWPS restrictions on the 22-250!

    Firstly it is my understanding that the NWPS won't issue any new deer hunting liences for such a caliber as the 22-250. This seems to be the unwritten rule and most people seem advise buying a larger caliber to keep this dept. happy.

    If this advise is sound then;

    Why don't the NWPS make it clear on their forms that they wont permit new owner of 22-250 to shoot deer with this caliber. The government SI clearly places this caliber in a position to do the job and the NPWS firmly state that that the 22-250 is the minimum caliber allowed!

    I continuously hear stories, that although it might seem that such a caliber is allowed, in reality it is next to impossible to receive a deer licence for such a gun via the NPWS.

    Could the NPWS not agree that long time owners of such a firearm should be allowed receive a deer hunting licence(even if they never previously held such a hunting licence) and that newcomers(who buy their rifle after a certain date) should be required to have a larger caliber!

    Perhaps there is a legal issue that forces the NWPS to state that a 22-250 is the minimum caliber that they'll allow even though they'd rather see people applying for hunting permits with 243's or similar sized firearms.

    If you were to take the NWPS Deer hunting form at face value, then one would be forgiven for believing that a 22-250 was a sound buy that meet all the requirements. I'd hate to think that perhaps they are turning people away after they have read the form and went out a handed over the precious cash only to be knocked back on some unwritten rule.

    I could be mistaken with the above comments so please don't take it to heart! I would like to hear some solid information back on the issue or even just your opinions

    conclusion

    The NWPS should re-word their forms to allow people understand what is required. If they dont want to licence new 22-250 then they should simply state this and supply a cut-off date.
    This would clear up this dilemma once and for all.

    Regards Ivan

    Last I heard (at last year's FCP conference), that's not the case according to the IDS, who just aren't bothering with upping the limit from the .22-250 because noone apparently wants to get a new one when they can get something more suitable, and apparently this trend's been going on since the late 1990s.

    +1

    They haven't changed it because there's still a few who were issued licences on 22-250's and they'll let them 'die out' first. New licences are being advised to get something more suitable.

    There would be a lot of people who have them - but that's only because for thirty years or so, you weren't allowed have anything bigger. Wasn't until the end of the 1990s that more humane rounds like the .243 and .270 were allowed back for deer hunting.

    From what the lads from the IDS were saying, they didn't think much of the .22-250 as a round, but there wasn't any point banning it because it'd been doing the job for decades. But as new people came in, and as old hands bought new rifles, they hoped that people would migrate themselves over to better rounds now that they had the choice.

    Sortof like the way you don't see so many people driving Lada's anymore, even though you can still get them :D
