I hope this is the right place to post this, don't really know where it would go...

I'm trying to do some research for a close relative.

Her brother emigrated to the US in the 70s & was in touch for several years, but some time around the late 80s all contact stopped following a falling out between her brother & another member of the family, (he took a "you're all against me" stance, even though they weren't).

She does know his PPS (or now called RSI) number from here from old family documents & has his USA social security number from something that was sent 20 odd years ago.

She suspects that he may have passed away some time ago as post has been returned unopened over the years & all efforts to track him down have failed.

Here's the kicker, he *might* have gone to live in the UK some time in the 90s as he got divorced in the USA & had friends there

Would there be a way of finding out if he's dead from using the social numbers ? Is there a public database once a death has been recorded ?

That's the starting point as we want to find out if he's actually alive before starting an extensive/expensive search for him.

For a death this recent, your best bet would be to commission the GRO to do a search for a 5 year period in the 80s and see what they come up with. PPS number will definitely help them narrow him down.

Can they check in the UK or Us though ?

Oh, sorry, I missed that part. No, they only do Ireland. You'd need to commission a similar search in each country. Social security number would help with the US but it does sound like a needle in a haystack. Good luck!

There is a US Social security death index, if he died in the US. This one is free on Rootsweb. It might be of help

the LDS website has some of the deaths in the US with Social Security Numbers. This is free to use :

    http://www.familysearch.org/

For deaths in the UK, Ancestry has some. This is a subscription service

If you want me to do a search on ancestry, PM the name of the individual you're looking for.
