Lions 2009: Ryan Jones' Lions tour ends before it begins

Ryan Jones was today ruled out of the British and Irish Lions tour after he had failed a medical test just a day after joining the tour as a replacement for Stephen Ferris.

Jones suffered a bang to his head during Wales’ 48-15 victory over USA in Chicago last Saturday. The Wales captain was forced off inside the opening quarter following a first-minute clash with Oxford University prop Will Johnson.
He was assessed in Wales before travelling to South Africa on Wednesday night after a scan had revealed that Ferris would be sidelined for up to six weeks with a grade two medial ligament tear.

Jones, who was a controversial omission from Ian McGeechan’s original selection, met up with the squad in Cape Town having flown back to Wales from Chicago on Monday.
“Like any player joining the squad, Ryan had a medical review today and we will be making a statement later tonight,” said a Lions spokesman.
With Jones ruled out it leaves the Lions requiring to call up another back row replacement and poses embarrassing questions about the sharing of medical information between the Lions and the Welsh camp.
Lewis Moody, James Haskell and Alastair Strokosch are all possible replacements.

Its a bit of a farce really, you would think they could coordinate this slightly better instead of flying him down there just to do a medical and then back on the next flight type thing..

Oh dear if you look at it on the flip side it's probably clear that the Lions management didn't even watch Jones play for Wales in the US and didn't see his head injury plus his very ordinary game against Canada.

This is absolutely ridiculous. You can guarantee some more forwards will get injured in the first 2 tests. We'll be lucky to put together a half decent team for the final test. I think the players should be looking for preserve themselves for the tests from now on.

I'd say its contingent on passing the medical.

    Will they replace him?

I think they suspected concussion in his last game but it was only confirmed when he got to SA.

I could have sworn I seen Bernard Jackman in the airport with him when he came in on sky sports....then again that would be announced.

From what I've read he wasn't supposed to have been training at all, due to a concussion (well, "suspected head injury").

Jinxed. It's the only explanation at this stage!

I think the worst part is that a fit player has been denied the opportunity to link up with the lions. They should have been told of his head injuries when they rang to get him!
