I've been asked to submit a little piece to a uk inflight magazine. What they want is for me to briefly mention & describe a place of interest in or around Knock. Nothing as obvious as the shrine though. A hidden gem, an interesting pub or something. I only moved to Mayo last year and live near Crossmolina so I'm not too familiar with Knock but I'll have to take a trip.

By putting a piece in the magazine I'll also be given the chance to promote my business 'abaca photography'.

Can anyone help recomend something in the area.

    Ciaran

Hey, it's hard to think of other attractions apart from the religious, etc.I'm about a 15 min drive away from knock so have a good idea of the place. theres a nice park and playground in knock though its not visible to the tourist that drives through. you must turn right after hospital. you could get some non-religious shots there....try the museum... museum2.jpgknock museum (near church grounds)

gift shop....nice little shop, handmade items...candles are nice..!

if i were you id do a piece on knock airport....thats not situated in knock but since you are doing an article for an inflight magazine it would be ideal...you could investigate whether it's the smallest airport in the world? i wanna write this article now! :( you could write interesting stuff about that...westlife are regular passengers through the airport etc... reply if you think this is anyways useful,

    lots of love,

    thanks for that.
I'll check them spots out. It's not much of an article though. More like top 3 tip for tourists to see while in and around Knock. Name of place, what makes it different and why I like it.

Ireland West Airport is a gateway to the North West region of Ireland. It got it's name from a small town nearby with a Catholic shrine, but virtually no one flying to the airport is going to want to visit Knock bar the odd pilgrim! It always makes me laugh when the Ryanair/BMI in-flight magazines have terribly badly researched articles trying to big-up Knock nightlife like it's a European city break destination. Hideous hotels, nothing to do unless your looking for a spiritual break.

Most tourists arriving in Ireland West will likely be looking for the outdoor activities, scenic beauty and traditional nightlife the West of Ireland is renowned for. Why not point out the real destinations people from the UK and Europe might want to visit in the West?!

    - Westport is the main tourism centre in Mayo with top class tourist facilities, hotels and spas, restaurants, nightlife, Irish music in the famous Matt Molloys pub. And it's the gateway to some of the most stunning scenery in Ireland:

    - The Louisburg drive west where you can climb Crogh Patrick and view Clew bays islands, or stop off at the many pristine sandy beaches.

    - Visit the beautiful Clare Island or Inis Boffin,

    - The Leenaun - Connemara mountain drive south via the wonderful Delphi adventure centre and Kilemore Abbey.

    - The Atlantic drive around Clew Bay to see the beaches and sea cliffs on Achil Island, or try the Atlantic surfing.

    - Ballina has many good hotels, and some of the best Salmon and Trout fishing in Europe, the drive to the Ceide Fields centre along the high cliffs, sea stack of north Mayo coast are worth a visit.

    - Sligo's bars and nightlife, top surf beaches like Strand Hill, horse riding holidays, Yeats country and Benbulbin walks.

    - Galway city culture and museums, Galway Races, Galway bay and beaches, watersports, the Arts festivals.

    - National Museum of Country Life - Castlebar

    Anything but bloody Knock village!!

Only the Knock House Hotel is left now in Knock since the Belmont closed last year, loads of b&bs though, only 4 pubs in Knock, The Thatch is across the road from the Shrine, other pubs are Kilkennys and Burkes at the top of the Hill, Cartys is on the old Kilkelly Road, in short only plan for a couple of hours max!!

What about Clonalis House in Castlerea seat of the O Connors last High Kings of Ireland. Fantastic Historical House and some really important Heritage.

to spend time in Knock village you really need to believe in the apparition of Herself and the power of prayer etc.

Knock Airport more interesting - how Canon Horan got it going, how it is faring etc

Croagh Patrick about 40 mile SW of Airport. Interesting in that it was a place of pagan worship for thousands of years - taken over by St Patricks as a place of christian pilgrimage, contains gold deposits. Much local controiversy there about 15 years ago re prospecting for gold on it - now banned by Governemt on religious.cultural reasons
