1995 toyota 4runner issue

Rear window for the tailgate wont go down, when i press the "up" button i can hear a motor working but nothing when i try to go down, i know its either a motor or a regulator, but both are quite expensive so wanted to try elimate one before i ordered??

anybody??

It's a common problem on the 2gen 4runner/hilux surf. The metal channel on the bottom of the glass rusts and the regulator has nothing to grip to pull the glass down.
You can check quite easily. On the inside of the fold down tailgate there is a carpet cover. This just clips off. Behind this is a metal plate held on by a few screws. Remove both. If I remember correctly this can be done from inside without dropping the tail

Then press the button to raise/lower the glass and see whats happening.

I repaired one a few years ago with some parts salvaged from a breakers yard. The channels were rusted away, so I used some from another car to repair it.

Had a look but cant see anything "not engaging", the was another 4 bolts that held all the "brains" of the tail gate and i unscrewed them, now i just get a relay clicking when i press up or down, no motor sounding at all???

Make sure the rear tailgate is fully clicked closed. The rear window won't work if the tail is not properly closed.

yeh checked that, light on dash is on if its not open properly and its off, i have panels on inside of tailgate stripped and sounds like motor is deffo working, it seems to be able to be pushed down on one side but not the other??? really frustrating as have to work on it from the inside

does anyone know where id pick up a 2nd hand tailgate??

Check out this forum. Lots of info on the 2nd Gen. You shouldn't buy a new tailgate until you have a scan through here. Probably a simple fix.

cheers, nah you see i need a new rear window aswell and wanted to see if i could buy the lot in one go, difficult sourcing parts for this model, do you know if the mk3 4runner takes all the same parts as a mk3 hilux surf??

Yeah, the UK spec 4Runner is the same as the Jap Hilux Surf 89-95.

For Hilux Surf/4Runner/Pickup parts try www.roughtrax4x4.co.uk. For delivery to Ireland, you may need to ring them.

I find them excellent, and their delivery is fast. In a lot of cases you get a choice between Toyota or spurious parts (brakes, exhausts, etc) where Toyota here can't be bothered to be of any help.

have parts on orner from them but they dont have all the parts i need, good site tho, only placed order yesterday so will see when they arrive

From experience, probably Tuesday/Wednesday. You'll probably get a call from Barry beforehand due to posting to Ireland (unless they fixed it on their site!)

For what model? I have one to suit a 96 on Hilux Surf or Landcruiser that I want to sell.

I have a kzn185 surf, 1996. Was looking at towbar, 3.5 ton ball and bar, twin electrics and guard setup.
