what do ye think? guy in my club plays off 12 , has teed it up in 11 compititions this year and has won 6 off them ,all scores in the fortys, he has never been cut? something to do with an away handicap? i had the pleasure of playing with him a few weeks back ,i didnot know it was him ,who everyone in the club is complaining about. "usual small talk on the first tee, name handicap, get out often" any way he pard the first 2 holes and had a 7foot birdy put on an extreamly hard par 3 into the wind .when he eventully took out the big stick he drove a 329 yard green ,he flew it that far. now this is no 12 handicapper i have ever seen this is a player low single figure imo .what is this away handicap crap that is allowing a cheat ill say it again a cheat to beat good honest golfers trying their best . any thaughts? how do you get rid off bandits ?

never heard of an away handicap???...i know sometimes you cant get cut in team comps but with swipe card now in use for the last 10 or 15 years I thought it was impossible to cheat as regards your handicap if you won a comp away from your local club

If he is an away player he needs to make sure he is returning his cards. The fact that he has remained at 12 suggests that he hasnt. If the club have that much of a problem they have a few solutions.

Return his cards to his home club on his behalf and make sure he is cut, have a computerised system which automatically updates his score standard scratch etc and he will get cut automatically or cut him on observation.

Unfortunately every club have these players and it will always remain because if they want they can make sure they get their .1's back till they are back at the chosen handicap

in fairness I dont think there is anything else you can do

If the club is aware of him and he isnt returning his cards its as much the clubs fault as its his, only other reason I can think it might suit the club if is he is picked on the club team to play competitions

what club are you again ??? ha

i remember about 15 years ago a group used to play in classics around leinster and they cleaned up..2 men and 2 women and the women were great golfers playing off mad handicaps and because it was classics they were rarely cut even though the general play rule was there it was rarely implemented...they even had the cheek sometimes handing in cards asking what time the presentation of prizes were ha ha

I agree with you mack. How is it possible not to get cut if the swipe cards are in operation. I thought that it was mandatory to swipe your card when you enter a singles comp? And hey presto when you check your handicap the following day you had been cut (if you had a score that is) . Am I missing something?

What's the rule at your club wrt to captains prize and it it not being this guy's home club?
Even if he does win, can he not be investigated/disqualified for playing at a handicap above his "correct" handicap. If he hasn't submitted/reported his away cards, but knows that he should be cut, then that would be enough to disqualify him

Broke my back this morning, had to play matchplay against a guy on his home course (Society Thing). I gave him 12 shots when the handicaps were deducted.
Hitting the ball further than me, touch around the green superb. It eats me.
It happens in classics, and club competitions, captains and presidents. Now creeping into matchplay as well. It puts me off entering them in future as you know you'll come up against some pr**k who's pulling all year.

Hi Sweetswing, I am a member of that club and have played recently with you. I too had an away handicap which meant i was a member of another club and that club was my home club and the club i am with now was my away club. It is up to the individual to nominate which club is his home club and to make sure they are aware of his scores. I agree that he is cheating and i presume collecting the prizes is important to him rather than his honesty. I changed my home club by contacting the clubs handicap committe and demanding a CONGU certificate. By the way good luck tomorrow, i know you have the game to do well. Must arrange a rematch in that matchplay again where we ran the other two lads close on the 17th.

this kind of thing really gets my back up. it is one of the reasons why i don't play much competitive golf anymore. re the classics/ society/team golf the gui are as much at fault as the cheaters. they removed the rule at their last agm about getting cut automatically for society golf, it is now up to the committee of each club to evaluate the cards when they are sent back. do you really think the club are going to cut someone who is on interclub team and if they get cut they will not be eligble not likely. naming and shaming is a great idea in theory but unless you have someone who will back you up on the story forget it it will be your word against theirs.

There is a lot of this crap going on around the country. Im on committee and we just recieved a card from another club where on of our members shot 74 gross in a non qualifying event.......his handicap is 12. Now im not saying that a golfer playing off 12 coundnt have a day where everything drops and goes his way but this individual keeps his handicap high by playing in open competitions and tapping the ball around the course thereby getting his .1 back.
The main reason he does it is to play in teams, mixed foreballs and classics. The worst thing is hes not the only one. I know of at least a dozen players who do exactly the same thing. This is going to sound impossible but last year one guy, an x-captain, managed to get from 13.5 to 17.5 by constantly playing open singles and just nudging the ball around.
The problem for the first guy I mentioned is that we now have his card which will be submitted to the GUI at the end of the season and he may be cut as a result.

while it is an ongoing problem no doubt the most number of shots a player can get back in a year is 2
even if they get 50 .1's back there handicap can rise from say 10 to 15 but they're playing handicap will be 12
this rule has been implemented by gui to stop guys or clubs manipulating handicaps
check it out with your handicap sec. coz he should know this and stop that carry on at your club

Is it not possible to get 4 shots in a single "season"? 2 from 0.1's and a further 2 if you never get into the "buffer zone" at the end of the year?

    Regards
    Ian

Thats how he did as far as I know. Makes a mockery of the whole system but there you go.

These clowns (bandits) make me sick. Nothing better than common thieves. The have absolutely no concept of the values and ethos of the game. They don't deserve to play the game. What is the point of winning lamps, cut glass, golf bags? Who are they trying to impress? I just don't get the twisted motivation of these people. My handicap more than anything is a sense of pride more than anything else. Personally I would rather beat standard scratch and get cut than win a prize and not get cut. If I want a new bag or a lamp I'll go and buy one thanks. Bandits are like magpies - accumulating trinkets to impress their mates

The bandits were out in force at the weekend in my club as big comp was on.

    SS is 37pts

    45 points won it.
    loads of 40's
    CSS was 38.

Course wasn't playing the hardest but still crazy scores.

    He loses 2.1
