Just back from a 2 day chill out break from the 5 star Castlemartyr Resort Hotel. An amazing place. They say 92m was spent on the place and you can see where it went. They have lowered their prices to €79 per person B&B. It is a 100% worth this and more. http://www.castlemartyrresort.ie/

They collapsed because of their attitude to the less well off IIRC, the new owners also own Dromoland?

FYI, the post I was referring to has since been removed. Can't remember the username, but it was their first post, and they were waxing lyrical about the resort.

The resort is lovely, don't get me wrong. But there's no need to be registering usernames just to big yourself up.

    Hmm.

What is so strange about that? When I lived in Bray we often stayed in various hotels around there (Dublin and Wicklow) for a meal and night out or something. Now I am in Cork we will soon be heading to hotels here for nights break from the kids. Nothing strange about it at all.

    Hmm.

Sure cork people all think that cork is the best place on earth, why would they want to go anywhere else :pac:

I was down in Ballycotton recently and drove up to see this place and ended up watching the Heineken cup final in the golf clubhouse. The hotel itself is very stuffy and the drinks/food were very overpriced but I'd imagine it would be nice as a "luxury treat".

    Beautiful grounds though !

Yeah I've heard this from Cork friends as well. They were far too snobby to welcome the locals and create some goodwill, resulting in an empty hotel. Hopefully the Dromoland group owners will do a better job. I've heard it's a beautiful hotel and grounds.

It closed down because not too many people want to spend a fortune to stay in a supposedly six star hotel in the arse end of east Cork. I'm local and stayed there without being looked down upon. I did look down, however, on the absolutely appalling restaurant service there. I have already heard of similar stories since it reopened - not a good sign!

I'm going to a wedding in the Castlemartyr later this month. Can anyone tell me how much a pint is there?

I'm trying to decide whether to bring a naggin or a shoulder of rum!

I reckon you're looking at around €4.70 for a lager, €4.10 for stout, and God only knows for spirits and mixers!

Their number is 021-4219000. I'd say ring and ask is your best option.

Thank you for the break suggestion in Castlemartyr. At such a rate and short drive from the airport its ideal for golfing enthusiasts for a family break.

Hardly a short drive from the airport.

If you're gonna drive that sort of distance, you'd be as well off heading for Kinsale.

    Good first post though!

Now this is just a hunch, but do you work there by any chance? How much is a pint?

No dont work there. My enthusiasm for the location seems to have been misinterpreted. Im considering Castlemartyr for a short break with a family. Travel Dublin to Cork by plane then drive. AA routeplanner advises 45 km from airport which all being relative, I consider short. Thank you to first post source.

    This was your second post:
"just wondering if anyone knows of anywhere in cork city, nightclub etc that does a salsa night. Moved here from dublin and took a few salsa classes. loved it and now would like to use salsa to meet new people and dance too"

I find it very strange that you are living in Cork, but are "considering Castlemartyr for a short break with a family"
If you don't work for the hotel, are you promoting it through a travel business?

When it smells like Shilling and looks like Shilling, it generally is....

30 mins from airport. hardly long.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 520 ✭✭✭corkandproud

Castlemartyr is not owned by Dromolond. It was owned by John F Supple and financed by Anglo.

Dromoland just operate the hotel and aren't a patch on the previous operators - Capella.

Where the ownership actually lies is disputed - I reckon we all own it!
