Elmgreen in Finglas. You get there off the Navna road at the Auburn Ave roadabout

Nevermind Elmgreen, if you've got 50 euro to spend then head to somewhere like Luttrelstown or Castleknock. Take a look at the GUI site or teetimes.ie... plenty of info on there.

Elm green is about 35 quid
pay an extra tenner and at least you can play on a course with some features / character as opposed to walking up-down-up-down for 3.5 hours

its good for practicing new techniques tho - so if ur still completing some personal golf research go for it
anyone under an 18 handicap would be bored outa their brain at elm green IMO

Conno whats your handicap again ??

What's his handicap got to do with it? He's just giving his opinion of the course.

well he seems to think that if you play with a lesser handicap than 18 you should not play this course !! I am under 18 handicap and dont find this course boring so re-read it again before you start barking at me

So my next question was just as you asked what has it got to do with it??? fook all, and he is supposed to be a beginner so how can he speak for all the under 18 handicappers ???

he is trolling like always so stop encouraging him

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,335 ✭✭✭conno16

in the current economic environment elm green is not an attractive proposition at €35 given the limitations of its design / layout / general facilities

it should be under 30 quid even at weekends

i doubt very much they are busy up there when you can play the likes of luttrelstown and castleknock for around €45

my point re those with a handicap under 18, it is certainly not challenging and is like a going-through-the-motions golf experience

Conno is qualified to speak about anything golf related, that's why we all get so excited when he starts a new thread...

Conno close your cake hole you know as much about golf as my 1 year old niece, If its the current economic environment your so worried about and it just boils down to money you would play the cheaper course everytime.

What in fact your doing is using that tripe you just typed to have a dig at some of the other boards lads that are members and its pathetic.

So let me guess this right:

Your a beginner at golf with limited experience
You can recognise the weakness in Shane Lowrys game and future career
You are in the forefront of golf fashion and style
Now you are a course designer and architect

I know what you are as does everyone else

    relax the cax buchaill

elm green is a very limited golf course IMO
it is not a major challenge for the experienced golfer
it is not value-for-money in the present environment

    all IMO
    that is all

I would have thought Elmgreen would have been right up a hacker such as yourself's street then?

Elmgreen isn't trying to compete with the likes of Luttrelstown and Castleknock, it is there to serve a purpose and in my opinion it does so very, very well. It is what is and going by the full car park virtually everytime i've been there over the past few weeks, Dublin's golfing public would seem to agree.

    I am nicely relaxed Conno

What you need to relax on is the trolling

That is quite clearly what he's trying to do. Shame the man is a ****ing idiot though and has got it arseways. If he had a notion of cop on he'd realise that anyone who is a member doesn't pay anywhere near 32 euro for a game.

This is the 4th or 5th time Conno has had a cheap, nonsensical dig at the place so hopefully the powers that be are taking note.

Have to agree about Elmgreen, it is a decent facilty with good practice areas, driving range , p&p etc and is not the worst place you could pay €35 for a round. I work 2 mins away and often pop in to use the putting green, range at lunchtime and after work and yes the car park is always full so they must be doing something right.
Played Turvey last night for €15 euro and thought it was great value, you can get it for €20 at certain times sat & sun

Castleknock is a great course for it's value!! You wont find any course that got a good drainage system on a raining day for the €45-50.

Conno me dear boy I can categorically tell you that Elmgreen is packed these days especially with the good weather. It is not an exaggeration to say the tee is booked up till 8 most evenings during June, how do I know? I’ve been trying to get out on spec and haven’t booked a tee time!

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I think you may find a fair few on here like Elmgreen

But it's ok for him to continually beat the same old tired drum with cheap insults about a certain course?

Lol @ the idiots that keep biting when the troll is fishing, oh and btw at least he is right about one thing Elmgreen is a bog standard boring track and anyone who say's different is deluding themselves and is certifiable.

Getting back to the subject, lads, I'd take your €50 and 30-45 minute drive and head beyond the the M50. Rathcore is 25 minutes from the M50 on the N4 and is €30, or head to Naas, South County, Beech Park - not sure about availability, but in your price range. These would be the best of a huge range of choice. And Elm Green is a lot of fun, so ignore the doom-and-gloom boys.

If you want to travel that bit further, Macreddin is worth a visit (especially as it might close!) and you should have no trouble getting out.

anyone can give their opinion Graeme as long as they do it within the rules. Insulting people and questioning mods decisions is not.

As it happens a lot of people hold similar opinions on this one anyway so it's hardly news.

Fair enough, but other people convey those opinions in the right way. He, on the other hand, does not.

Turvey is e20 at the weekend at the moment( special offer)
    Corbalis is e25

    both good value IMO

OP, on the southside I'd say stepaside is a nice course (though hilly) and is only €40 at weekends. Great views of the city there too.

If you can get to Wicklow GC too its pretty cheap and a great course, not sure what the summer rate is.

Edit: actually thinking about it now, I'm going to +1 myself for wicklow :) On a summers day it is one of the nicest places you could be.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 180 ✭✭Dylan69

Have you tried the course in leopardstown...it's quite cheap and easy enough to get in. Mite not be the best course around.
I would recommend either wicklow g.c or macereddin (well worth the trip):)

Sorry to have to agree with Conno who doesn't appear to be flavour of the month, and I suppose I'm showing my age when 35 euro wasn't a cheap green fee. If the OP has the budget, I'd be with Kevin and look elsewhere. Elm green is ok, good condition, but in value terms, I do think I'd play elsewhere for the money available -it's got to be a buyer's market at this stage.
Perhaps there's personal history colouring some perspectives here, but in response to the original query, I'd not be putting it high up the scale if I was recommending for that price if I'd the budget mentioned.
Reactions to courses is always subjective - usually on the basis of how slow the round was, how one played the course, company, conditions and weather on the day, but the suggestion to look at teetimes.ie/Kevins ratings/open fixtures if you've a handicap etc would be worth considering.
    Best of luck

    Gents, and ladies if any.

Turvey is great value at 20 over the weekend and you can get out mid week for 15, if you book on teetimes.ie or on the web site. www.turveygolfclub.com.

There is usually no problem getting a tee time on a sat after 12:00 and 13:00 on s Sun
The club got a mention on Markham's 6,800-mile odyssey unearths some hidden gems. in the independent news paper if you want an impartial brief review.

    Open day on a Tuesday.

    and yes I am member.

In the effort of not starting a new thread I’d like to know a lttle more about Wicklow golf course, I take it form Willy's post its very nice, however I'd like to know people's playing opinions and how difficult the course is, or any tips in general, cheers folks.....

Wicklow is a great track and I think it is 40euro no matter what day and time of year. Not the most difficult course but has some billiant holes like the 2nd which is on a cliff. Come to think of it the whole course is built on a cliff. if you havent played it I recommend you give it a try.

Great stuff, cheers. So I take it I should go for the safe option with an iron of a few of the par 4's? Especially if its anyways windy?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 180 ✭✭Dylan69

Wicklow GC is a great golf club, lots of holes along the cliffs. 4th hole i think is far the best driving hole, you standing on edge of the cliff and you have to hit it over 200 yards to avoid the sea.

This course is well worth its value!!! All 18 holes are cool

If anybody up for a round on Friday afternoon, let me know!!:)

Thats the 6th from the "Nose" as its known. Depending on the wind it can be an unreachable hole in two even though its only just over 400yards. However if the wind is with you it can be as little as a wedge for the second shot.

    Regards
    Ian

That 6th hole’s a savage hole, (played it today) wind was against and it was almost frightening! Well I got it over and yes it was a long hole after. Played off the blues and it measured just short of 6000 yards, but I can honestly say that it played way longer. I forgot the amount of holes I played driver and 4 iron to the green, that 10th hole, it was a decent (alright) drive than a good four iron and it just hit by the side of that right hand bunker and rolled down a bit.

All in all a great course, its tough, I think a little underrated in terms of difficulty. Our playing partners advised us on the 1st tee that it’s short but when the wind is taken into accounts its no way short. The par 3’s are hard, I remember the 17th the best and if you’re not on the green your out of the hole! 11th is a long one too.

Greens extremely fast and the chances of losing balls are high, especially into that gorge stuff.

Great course (tight in places!) and will be back
